John Dwyer
Vinegar Mirror

Just in case you didn’t know, John Dwyer is not only the creative and driving force behind everyone’s favourite San Francisco rock band Oh Sees and co-owner of the Castle Face label, he also likes to take photos. Vinegar Mirror is a coffee table book filled with his photos taken between 2009 and 2013. The book depicts what caught Dwyer’s eye from his home in San Francisco to pretty much everywhere else.

OCS
Live In San Francisco

OCS. Oh Sees. Thee Oh Sees. All the same thing. This is OCS Live In San Francisco. This was originally released as a very limited 4LP set. Now we have a 2LP version which will be much easier to get your hands on. It is released via Rock Is Hell, a label which released some early stuff by Thee Oh Sees. 2LP on Rock Is Hell limited to 1700 copies.

Thee Oh Sees
An Odd Entrances

Thee Oh Sees take a slight break from their constant forward motion by adding something to a previous release: An Odd Entrances is to be considered as a sister album to A Weird Exits. Dwyer and co here explore the flipside to their usual frantic garage thrashings, with a set of calmer tracks full of cellos and flutes. Gorgeous as ever of course. On Castle Face, naturally.

Oh Sees
Face Stabber

Some things are always true.  You're always less than 6 months away from a John Dwyer release. That release will be by a band using a variant on Oh Sees as its name. Dwyer will have recorded some of that album wearing jean shorts that stop below the knee. And the songs that fill that release will be high intensity fuzzy garage rock.

Thee Oh Sees
Grave Blockers

You’re thinking how on earth do Thee Oh Sees manage to put so many new records out, right? Well, in the case of this one it’s a reissue. Grave Blockers was originally released in 2006 and sees John Dwyer et al in a gentler mood, playing some psych-folk rather than the unhinged garage rock to which we’ve become accustomed.

Oh Sees
Smote Reverser

Seemingly incapable of stopping making music for one second, this is Oh Sees 6th album in the last three years if you include Thee Oh Sees and OCS in that tally. Yet Dwyer keeps pushing forward with his double drum line up with all kinds of alumni making guest appearances. Expect more scorching psych but this time with a heavy prog vibe (see sleeve).

Damaged Bug / Black Pus
LAMC No. 17

The LAMC series, now up to its seventeenth release, has a lovely format: one artist provides an exclusive track, and the B-side is filled by a lesser-known act of their first artist’s choosing. In this case Damaged Bug submit a nifty piece of cool sneaky garage and select a track from Black Pus, aka hypermagic drummer Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt! A quality 7” whichever side you look at it. On Famous Class.

Damaged Bug
Bunker Funk

Damaged Bug is the cracked-up solo project of Thee Oh Sees frontman and all-round garage-psych mastermind John Dwyer. Bunker Funk is a cool little thing, wrapping songs in lots of strange sounds and textures. Electroacoustic garage-funk? Yeah, something like that. Out on Dwyer’s own imprint Castle Face.
