Who could have predicted that the after-hours part of a TV channel that specialises in children's cartoons bringing together two middle-aged rappers would result in the greatest merchandising opportunity since Star Wars? Not me, that's for sure.
Run The Jewels (dot com) are Killer Mike (he kills mics, duh) and El-P (El Producto baby!), two rappers who prior to connecting worked hard but had to make do with being relatively underground. Killer Mike is a long time affiliate of Atlanta's finest, the Dungeon Family, who played a part in the story of another hip-hop duo you might have heard of, OutKast. El-P cut his teeth as part of New York indie-rap greats, Company Flow, as well as doing production work for the likes of Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, eventually going on to produce all of Killer Mike's brilliant R.A.P. Music.
After that initial collaboration in 2012 they became a fully fledged rap duo, releasing Run The Jewels, Run The Jewels 2, Run The Jewels 3, Meow the Jewels, a Virtual Reality headset, and a truly vertigo-inducing assortment of other merchandise. But let's focus on the music shall we? The one thing Run The Jewels have over almost everyone is chemistry. Mike and El love each other, and it's this above all else that makes their music so compelling. It does help that they're both very good at rapping and that El-P's production is as entertaining as its always been. RTJ!
