FKA Twigs Vinyl, CD & tapes by FKA Twigs at Norman Records
In many ways FKA twigs is an archetypal artist of the early 21st century. A polymath who has dance and video direction among her skill set, the music made by Tahliah Debrett Barnett is in the orbit of pop yet is difficult to categorise more specifically than that. Stylistically adventurous and emotionally open, FKA twigs’ intimate music has set her apart from the pack and also provided a blueprint for scores of followers. Forbears to the FKA twigs style include Kate Bush, Beck, Tricky and Björk, though this is as much down to a shared iconoclasticism and commitment to pushing boundaries as it is a similarity of sound.
After years as a dancer in which she appeared in videos for Wretch 32 and Jessie J, FKA twigs debuted in 2012 with ‘EP1’, a record which brought together sounds from trip-hop, art-pop and boundary-pushing electronic composition under a banner of sensual moodiness. ‘EP1’ had plenty of stylistic overlap with the then-rising Arca, and as such it made sense when the pair teamed up on ‘EP2’ (I can see a theme emerging here) the following year. With her star high following the success of ‘EP2’s singles ‘Water Me’ and ‘Papi Pacify’, FKA twigs made good on the early promise with her first full-length, entitled - yep - ‘LP1’ (2014).
It would take Barnett five years to release another full-length record. In the interim she featured on A$AP Rocky’s ‘Testing’ and dropped the ‘M3LL155X’ EP, but also experienced problems in her personal life that included breaking up with her fiancé Robert Pattinson and needing surgery to remove fibroid tumours from her uterus. Those experiences were channelled into ‘Magdalene’ (2019), an album of bruised but proud art-balladry which placed in the year-end lists of pretty much every major publication going.
Sold out - sorry!
