Jessy Lanza Vinyl, CD & tapes by Jessy Lanza at Norman Records
Across three studio albums brackets and a handful of EPs (at the time of writing - 16:20 BST, Friday 14th August, 2020 by the Gregorian calendar) Jessy Lanza has established herself as a premiere purveyor of alternative R&B and dance-pop, a critical darling capable of bringing the party up and winding it back down again.
Often found working alongside collaborator Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), Lanza's music takes the early-90s stylings of Aaliyah and Sade and combines them with instrumentals which tend to have either a wistful hypnagogic sheen or upbeat danceable flare about them - sometimes both. It makes for hugely evocative listening on LPs like ‘Pull My Hair Back’ (2013) and ‘Oh No’ (2016), records which both earned Lanza nominations for prestigious Polaris music prize in her homeland of Canada
There may be plenty of retro thrills to the Lanza sound, but she is no mere throwback artist. Floor-friendly synth-pop has long run at R&B and house tempo, but Lanza records often contain danceable joints which push on into the quicker, more unusual groove sounds like footwork and juke. This isn’t mere lip-service - indeed, arguably Lanza’s finest work today is ‘You Never Show Your Love’, her aching, heated 2015 collaboration with Teklife leading lights DJ Spinn & DJ Taso.
