Sophie began making waves with last year's indispensable pop tune "Bipp", and the London-based producer returns now with "Lemonade", another slice of bizarre dance music with high-pitched vocals that reflect the naive and rapid-fire aesthetic of the PC Music label. Sophie is a producer who doesn't know or believe that what comes up must come down.
SOPHIE. Pffff we were all there at the beginning listening to this schizoid form of electronica that has something of the Aphex Twin about it but little did we know how it was so seriously hip, trendy and ear-breakingly compressed. You can see here the obsession with 'pop' that led to what ended up on the OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES LP. Non-ironic pop music where the usual caveat has to be carefully employed .... very harmful to dogs ears.
Taken from the end of SOPHIE’s recent singles collection PRODUCT, Just Like We Never Said Goodbye is a full-on electronic pop tune, with chirrupy vocals and lurching synth-lines. The whole business feels slightly off-kilter though, as if something about this isn’t quite right… That’s a good thing by the way! 12” on Numbers with the SOPHIE logo screen-printed on the inner.
‘Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides’ is the most realised release yet from Scottish electronic artist Sophie. Those of us slightly wary of what initially seemed like an irony heavy take on pop have had such concerns demolished. What we have here is maximalist, experimental pop full of garbled hooks and great metallic thwacks. The LP is pressed on red vinyl and released via the label Transgressive.
