Ekin Fil
Heavy

Heavy by name, heavy by nature. VAKNAR are reissuing Turkish artist Ekin Fil's album Heavy. It's an album that uses hushed vocals, whispering percussion, and drones wallowing in a kind of thick audio mud to create something far bigger than the sum of its parts. Aphex Twin is a fan, so should you be.

Ekin Fil
You, Only

You, Only is a collection of "sound tapestries" by Turkish singer and ambient musician Ekin Fil, now being released on tape by VAKNAR. Expect haunting atmospheres, plenty of space, and Fil's tender vocals. She's worked on film scores before, winning 'Best Soundtrack' at the Türkish Film Fest, and this is evident in the cinematic feel of her work.

Ekin Fil
KOMA

A new Ekin Fil, this time on Sweden’s Possible Motive. Throughout 32 minutes and eight songs, Ekin Üzeltüzenci laces sodden, pensive guitar and electronics with reverberating vocal layers. While bound to awaken comparisons with the likes of Grouper, it’s clearly produced by different means. The mournful, uneasy procession of ‘Stay Severed’ is a brilliant highlight.

Maps

When Ekin Fil moved from the centre of Istanbul to an island in the Sea of Marmara she found herself experiencing a very different kind of isolation. You get a sense of this on Maps, her whispered vocals find themselves alone in midst of a gentle whirl of ambient piano, organs and guitars.

Ekin Fil
Inflame

Instanbul's Ekin Fil has been on soundtrack duties and created this unnerving and dread laden work for the film of the same name, and same style. Following historic approaches to such material, the album is at once both suffocating and spacious, a conflict of confusion that marries cinema and sound so well.

Being Near

Turkey’s Ekin Fil plays quiet, introverted shoegazer-songwriter pieces with the kind of deep-isolation feeling that only the finest practitioners in this field can create (think Grouper). Being Near is a delicate, thickly-reverbed song suite that’ll sink your mind deep into a warm morass if you’ll let it. Released by The Helen Scarsdale Agency.

Reds

Turkish multi-instrumentalist Ekin Üzeltüzenci presents an intriguing EP for the always unpredictable London-based label Exotic Pylon. Distressed and echo-laden, Üzeltüzenci’s soundworld always seems liable to tip over into the downright inhospitable. Yet there’s something like a blackened pop heart beating under the opaque surfaces, drawing the listener in through the sonic fog.
