Nocturnal Projections
Inmates In Images

Brilliant but short-lived New Zealand legends Nocturnal Projections barely released an album in their lifetime (their studio recordings have been collected elsewhere as 'Complete Studio Recordings') so it's nice to see a release of these live recordings. Direct from the board, they showcase the talents of a band who, had they continued, could well have been put alongside Joy Division and Wire as post punk greats.

This Kind Of Punishment
This Kind Of Punishment

Following the demise of their previous band Nocturnal Projections, New Zealand brothers Peter and Graeme Jeffries began to deconstruct their post punk sound into something more pastoral and intimate. This became the handful of recordings they made as This Kind of Punishment. This is superb, intimate and thoughtful music with classical and baroque overtones.

Nocturnal Projections
Complete Studio Recordings

Right, this is absolutely essential. Nocturnal Projections were the original post punk band of brothers Graeme and Peter Jeffries (This Kind of Punishment/The Cake Kitchen/solo) and though they never released an album in their lifetime, they deserve to be placed alongside post-punk legends such as Joy Division, Wire  and the Fall. This collects all their studio recordings in one place for the first time.

This Kind Of Punishment
A Beard Of Bees

New Zealand's finest gloom brothers, the Jefferies, worked their way around post-punk swirl in a variety of bands and had the pleasure of releasing it for classic labels like Xpressway and the esteemed Flying Nun. Their best project was This Kind of Punishment, where their more experimental inclinations came to life; A Beard of Bees was a record of strange movements tethered by their dirgy melodic inclinations.

Peter Jefferies & Jono Lonie
At Swim 2 Birds

Flying Nun reissue At Swim 2 Birds by Peter Jefferies & Jono Lonie for the first time since its release in 1987. This is a true lost gem of New Zealand experimental music. The music is hard to pin down, like a restless DIY chamber music created from manipulated tapes, field recordings and some stunning violin and piano playing.

This Kind Of Punishment
Radio Silence

This Kind Of Punishment were a dusty gem of a band from the 1980’s New Zealand underground, and the title track of Radio Silence has just been dug up from the archives for its first ever release. Fuzzy-feeling, highly melodic but covered in lovely murk. Limited edition of 1000 translucent orange vinyl copies, on Superior Viaduct.

The Last Great Challenge In A Dull World

Reissue of New Zealand singer / songwriter Peter Jefferies' brilliant debut album 'The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World'. Originally released in 1990, the album received some critical acclaim before disappearing into the ether. But it was just too good to remain forgotten. Incredibly strong songwriting, demonstrated no better than with the single, 'The Fate of the Human Carbine' which was covered by Cat Power. Available on CD or vinyl.
