Dez Williams Vinyl, CD & tapes from this artist at Norman Records
Elektronik Religion founder Dez Williams drops a new four-track EP via Bedouin Records (Pan Daijing, Eomac). Against Your Will allows Williams to show off his love of Drexciya - the third track is called ‘Hexciya’ - through the rose-tinted vision of rave revivalism. The aesthetic is more distorted and gritty than practitioners like Special Request and Daniel Avery, though the squiggly basslines, breaks and halcyon-glow synths are all sounds those producers return to time and again. There’s a fair bit in common with the murk of Actress’ AZD.
Dez Williams returns to Earwiggle after setting up his own Elektronik Religion label. Big and distorted is king here. Acid house basslines, floppy, industrial and destroyed kick drums, trashy cymbals riding atop of a huge bed of distorted synths that fall in and out of vision, gated white noise and unintelligible samples. Richard Briers nowhere to be seen.
UK producer Dez Williams has been turning out work for more than a decade now, on labels such as Warm Data and his own Elektronik Religion imprint. The Sleight Of Hand EP now lands on Shipwrec Records with 5 tracks of finely-calibrated electro and techno to keep dancefloors moving and synapses firing.
When it comes to acid-drenched techno, Dez Williams knows what he's doing. He's got a storied history in dystopian global funk, derelict industrial assaults and burbling squelchy electro, and he's going to school us in it with 'Strength In Numbers'. This is the soundtrack to a ride across UK's finest wastelands.
