Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad presents
The Midnight Hour Instrumentals

Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have previous. In the past they’ve teamed up to score the 2016 Marvel series Luke Cage, and you might also recognise a snippet of The Midnight Hour Instrumentals’ ‘Questions’ from Kendrick Lamar’s ‘untitled 06’. Snapped up for Lamar's beat when it was still in demo form, the full track appears here with vocals from CeeLo Green. The rest of this LP finds the pair paying tribute to the Harlem Renaissance with a series of smoky neo-soul/hip-hop takes. Guests include Bilal, Laetitia Sadier and Luther Vandross.

Black Dynamite (Instrumentals / Original Motion Picture Score)

Director Scott Sanders made 'Black Dynamite' as a parody of the Blaxploitation genre, about a spy on a mission to take revenge on his brother's murderer. The score was composed by Adrian Younge, and was his first ever release. Like Sanders' film, it's inspired by and sends up the music of Blaxploitation cinema, utilising synth, keyboards and organs as well as sax and soft percussion. 'Black Dynamite' shows that Younge has a firm understanding of the tropes that made this genre so prominent. On 'Black Dynamite (Instruments / Original Motion Picture Score)', Younge offers up the instrumentals that comprised the film's score.

Voices Of Gemma Instrumentals

‘Instrumental’ records often come off like vanity projects that only ever have real appeal for the producer and a very select number of die-hard completists. Not so Adrian Younge’s Voices Of Gemma. The original record purposely pitted plush library-pop against eerie and operatic female vocals to bring about a sense of Twilight Zone uncanniness. Now Linear Labs strip out the singing to allow the just-a-little-too-comfortable instrumentals to work their magic on you.

Adrian Younge presents
Voices Of Gemma

A giddy LP from former Ghostface Killah and Ali Shaheed Muhammad collaborator Adrian Younge here. Voices Of Gemma is something of an iron fist in a velvet glove. These ten tracks will often lull you in with gorgeous, lilting tunes lifted straight from the David Axelrod songbook before hitting you with a sharp left hook. It could be an unsettling lyric, an incongruous bass lick or simply the single appearance of a male vocal after a record of head-voice female parts, but these intrusions destabilise the fantastical world that Younge otherwise sets up with such meticulous care. This is a louche, dreamy and uncanny listen.

The Electronique Void (Black Noise Instrumentals)

Stepping away for a minute from his recent killer collaborations with Ghostface Killah, producer (and entertainment law professor!) Adrian Younge considers this album to be an ‘academic’ one: a demonstration of the emotional capabilities of synthesisers. The Electronique Void certainly has the playful vibe of some early synth pioneers, though with an extra helping of groove in the mix. Out on Linear Labs.

Adrian Younge Presents The Delfonics
The Delfonics Instrumentals

The Delfonics are a vintage soul group who experienced a late-career resurrection when producer Adrian Younge got involved. His hip-hop informed approach was a hell of a boost, and this previously unreleased collection of instrumentals shows off the sheer god-damn groove of this fine outfit. LP release on Younge’s Linear Labs label.

Adrian Younge Presents The Delfonics

Ghostface Killah-collaborator and purveyor of all gritty ‘70s sounds, Adrian Younge sought to re-invent Philly sweet-soul vanguards the Delfonics for the modern day. Teaming up with Delfonics’ William Hart, Younge presented the album in 2013 and its music has made it to Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix in the time since. Now it receives the reissue treatment with the LP out late January on Linear Labs.

The Electronique Void: Black Noise

Usually known for making soul which nostalgically looks back to the 60s and 70s, his soundtrack work and collaborations with Ghostface Killah, The Electronique Void: Black Noise is his first fully electronic release, and a highly conceptual one at that, keeping his nostalgic tint by looking back at the synthesizer and comparing it with a love affair.
