WANDA GROUP Vinyl, CD & tapes from this artist at Norman Records
Louis Johnstone is a restless creature of many aliases, and best known for the ultra-minimal collaged field recordings of Wanda Group. His intimate home recordings as Henry Caravan shrug off any semblance of artifice. This tape is a foray into rambling but unexpectedly fluent acoustic guitar improv that hints at Derek Bailey, Jandek and even Robbie Basho, occasionally embellished with spontaneous lyrical murmurs and audible nasal congestion. “Authenticity” can become a troublesome hang-up, but the utter lack of desire to impress here feels like an act of trust towards the listener.

Louis Johnstone, aka Wanda Group aka Mr. Group aka Caps Lock Man, has another alias and it's Henry Caravan. While he's not making patchwork collages from his endless tray of field recordings, he might be sitting at a piano, as he ostensibly is on Tongue Order -- you can still hear the real world debris happening about him, but amidst the creaking are some jointless, discordant piano renditions played with a nice penchant for the dramatic. It's scary, pretty and very simple, with these one-take recordings happening between a recorder and a piano and little else -- except a nearby plant he occasionally brushed up against.
Wanda Group returns with Ornate Circular, a dense slab of field recordings and tape manipulation from this prolific artist. On this cassette for NNA Tapes, DIY musique concrete and lo-fi drone is filtered through Louis Johnstone’s unique perspective and wry sense of humour. Wanda Group samples everything from radio interference to signal processing, and then twists it up until there’s nothing left.
As ever, more audio wonder from WANDA GROUP! For the Sun Ark label’s he’s put together 2 new slabs of his patented unique sound: indistinct field recordings, massive clouds of digital process-hiss, unidentified audio detritus… We can count on WANDA, and A Man Moves Out Of His Skeleton. Cassette tape on Sun Ark.
Super-fresh line-up at this show, part of the Recon Festival. Producer Mumdance heads up the bill, which also contains electro-acoustic noise / drone man Helm and the always wonderful Wanda Group. So you can expect a torrent of textured soundscapes, rounded off by some left-leaning raw dance jams. At Headrow House.
These two long-form compositions typify the work of gentle noisemaker and field recording/found sounds artist WANDA GROUP but have brand new motivations: 'Symirroretry' serves as the score for a film by Kansas director Andrew Lovgren, which aims to show the intersection between art and skateboarding.
