Illmatic was the debut album from New York rapper, Nas. Upon its original release in 1994, when Nas was just 20 years old, East Coast hip-hop was losing its identity. Illmatic, with tracks like N.Y. State Of Mind, gave the genre’s birthplace a much needed shot in the arm.

Illmatic XX

Originally released in 1994 Illmatic is a masterpiece that eloquently harmonises positive self-determinism with a stark reality, defining a generation of hip-hop that has inspired and informed up and coming artists and performers for decades. ‘Illmatic XX’ is a special twentieth-anniversary edition featuring all kinds of extras, promos and remixes.

Hmmm….what can I say about New York rapper Nas that you don’t already know? After all, he’s sold 30 million records which means he is much more famous than many of the artists on our website,  and most people know all there is to know already. Well, how about this: He has a vinyl version of his 11th album, It’s called Nasir, which is his full first name, but I guess you know that last bit, huh? Kanye West has produced 7 of the tracks. We expect this to be big. LP on Mass Appeal/ Def Jam.

Nas gave us more than we bargained for on his fourth LP Nastradamus. The record was originally going to be an odds-and-sods collection consisting of stuff that didn’t make the cut for previous album I Am…, but bootlegging problems meant that Nas went back into the studio and cut a few fresh dubs. Mobb Deep and Ginuwine guest, and beats are handled by a wealth of producers including DJ Premier and Timbaland. It sounds like Nas, so we don’t really need to describe it for you.

I Am...

You’re right, Nas. You are. You’ll never be what you were - Illmatic will be your gift and your curse - but you definitely still are. I Am… will be the record in which you find yourself caught between your roots and your reality. It will see you try to rekindle past flames - a song called ‘N.Y. State Of Mind Pt. II’, sampling yourself (twice) on ‘Nas Is Like’ - as well as keep the commercial clout of 1996’s It Was Written. It will feature beats by DJ Premier and Timbaland, and guest spots from DMX and Aaliyah. It will be a double-album in order to accommodate all of this heavy-lifting. It will come out in 1999, but will be repressed in 2018. And most excitingly of all, it will be stocked by Norman Records.
