The Way Is Read is a collaboration between the vocal talents of The Staves and yMusic, a musical ensemble outta NYC. The two acts initially worked together at Justin Vernon’s Eaux Clares festival - a festival that is known for artists performing together. This, however, is the first time that a new recording has come out of a collaboration. The result is a beguiling mix of folk and classical music. 140g LP on Nonesuch.
‘If I Was’ is English acoustic folk rock trio The Staves' follow up to their stunning 2012 debut 'Dead & Born & Grown'. Produced by American, indie folk band Bon Iver's Justin Vernon following an extensive tour together and a trip to Eau Claire in Wisconsin which resulted in the recording sessions that would form the basis of their collaboration. The result is a powerfully beautiful work of modern songwriting.
The Staves are a sisterly trio crafting indelible indie pop, and 'Blood I Bled' is but a teaser of what's to come -- this three-song EP shows the band preparing for their next record, which follows up 2012's 'Dead & Born & Grown'. Things really do seem to come in threes for this band, which is a pretty cool gimmick. Title track "Blood I Bled" is a hushed ukelele jam that explodes with a commanding voice, old-school riffs by the way of the Decemberists and newer Fleet Foxes, and some good old trumpet.
