Damon Albarn’s recent return to his original Britpop days with that Blur reformation could potentially distract from the work he’s done popularising more international sounds. This reissue of 2002’s Mali Music finds him working with kora-god Toumani Diabate and singer/guitarist Afel Bocoum among others, with joyous effect. Double LP on Honest Jon’s.
Ex-Blur frontman and the real life human being behind the music of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn has been toying with solo ventures for a minute now, having been commissioned for modern operas and other neo-classical missions. 'Everyday Robots' is Albarn tinkering with the conventions of a standard singer-songwriter record, with electronic flourishes, folk traditions, trip-hop beats and knotty narratives. It features ambient musician and legendary producer Brian Eno, Natasha Khan and excited vocals from the Leytonstone City Mission Choir.
