White Out Vinyl, CD & tapes by White Out at Norman Records
Long-running experimental ensemble White Out never quite fully embrace the total ‘white out’ of full noise, but they enjoy skirting close to it. And improvising guitarist Nels Cline makes for a perfect partner in their electro-acoustic travels. They’ve played together plenty, but Accidental Sky is their first album release to date. On Northern Spy.

Live at No Fun
White Out are an improvising duo who use percussion, electronics and voice to map out new sonic territory. Often they are (relatively) quiet and exploratory, but this performance from New York’s No Fun noise-fest sees them dragged into noise-blast territory by one-time collaborators C. Spencer Yeh and Carlos Giffoni. Yeah!
White Out w/ Jim O'Rourke & Thurston Moore
Thurston Moore & Tom Surgal
Erstwhile guitar-noise practitioner and former Sonic Youth guy Thurston Moore teams up with Tom Surgal and his drum kit for this 1996 free-improv session. The two duck and weave around each other, generating sizzling electro-crackle atmospheres for all the family. This reissue of Not Me comes with new liner notes in a replica of the original LP sleeve, and is limited to 500 copies. On Fourth Dimension.
White Out w/ Jim O' Rourke & William Whitmore
China Is Near
Free-wheeling experimental duo White Out team up with percussionist William Winant and everything-ist Jim O’Rourke for China Is Near, on ATP Recordings. From the name (and the pedigree) you might expect an all-consuming blast of white noise, but actually this is a very considered and varied record, full of absorbing textures juxtaposed against each other.
