Basic Rhythm
New Style EP

Despite spending the past couple of years focussing on getting his East Man project off the ground, Anthoney J Hart has still found time to put together some fresh Basic Rhythm material. This New Style EP is classic Sneaker Social Club fare, all retro-rave thrills and pirate radio fetishism. If you’re digging that Special Request aesthetic then this one’s definitely for you.

Anthoney Hart (East Man, Imaginary Forces) returns to the prestigious Planet Mu label under his Basic Rhythm alias after a short absence, with On The Threshold. A collection that promises to be a treat for DJs, it sprawls from drum’n’bass to jungle and hardcore on a thread of thoughtfulness and experimentalism.

East Man
Red, White & Zero

Anthoney Hart - he of Basic Rhythm and Imaginary Forces fame - drops the first release of his East Man project on Planet Mu. Red, White & Zero is a whip-smart take on grime also incorporates elements of jungle, techno and hardcore, with an overall effect not dissimilar to the ‘ruff sound’ pioneered by Novelist and Mumdance. Features include Darkos Strife, Killa P and Kwam, while academic Paul Gilroy provides liner notes.

Basic Rhythm
The Basics

Basic Rhythm (another project from Anthony J Hart of Imaginary Forces) presents an engagement with the UK’s history of pirate radio, garage, grime, jungle etc. Rather than straightforwardly following any one of these styles, The Basics slinks around the back alleys, using bits and pieces as it sees fit. Vinyl LP on Type, limited to 500 copies.

Basic Rhythm
Slewage

Anthony J Hart AKA Imaginary Forces re-adopts his Basic Rhythm moniker for three tracks of apoplectic hardcore on Slewage. He mixes jungle, dark garage and dubstep to create some bin-troubling depths of sound. Slewage also includes a remix by US compatriot Rabit which tears it up even more. Limited edition of 300 on Type.

Imaginary Forces
Visitation

On the increasingly busy techno / noise axis, Imaginary Forces falls roughly halfway, with ugly crackles of digital harshness tending to push at the edges and threaten to overwhelm without quite managing to dominate the low rumbling rhythms. The tension between the two is a treat though. One track features spoken word from Closed Circuit too. Visitation is out on Fang Bomb.

Imaginary Forces
And What?

Rabit’s Halycon Veil imprint presents a selection of rough and ready noise/grime hybrids from Imaginary Forces. On And What? the high BPM, aggro synths and rough-edged drum programming that connect grime and footwork are amplified until they become almost atonal. This is futuristic dance music.

Imaginary Forces
Shift Work

London-based producer Imaginary Forces moves away from his own Sleep Codes label for a release on Bedouin Records Inc. Fusing industrial leanings with dark ambient tendencies this expansive 12” is an ode to dystopian realms. Knowingly titled Shift Work it’s a nod to the grit and the grind of modern life. Out on 12” vinyl from Bedouin Records Inc.

Imaginary Forces
Corner Crew EP

This second 12” release by Imaginary Forces  kicks off with the title track ‘Corner Crew (Frozen Version)’, an ice cold head nodder, saturated in subsonic frequencies, and a hint at the dub influences that appear more heavily later on in the EP. The second track ‘Whiteboys” has a blurred out vibe, full of deep subs and lurching beats. ‘Continual Dub’ starts with a staggered beat before evolving into a low slung dubbed out skanking rhythm, with reference to reggae sound systems and dub-plate culture. The fourth and final track starts with a swaggering, off kilter drum loop and vocal hook, driving along with loose cut outs and sub stabs and a repetitive vocal loop, before launching into a fuzzy, full bodied, sub bass melody in the latter half.
