Yawny Yawn

Bill Ryder-Jones’ 2018 LP Yawn was a fine set of epic ballads in that sort of Richard Hawley/Bill Callahan/Elbow tradition. On Yawny Yawn we find the former member of The Coral stripping back the tunes of Yawn to the bare essentials - just piano, voice and a few wisps of ambient electronics. This tender treatment allows the stark beauty of Ryder-Jones’ music to come into even sharper focus.

Yawn

Former The Coral bloke Bill Ryder-Jones drops his latest solo effort via Domino. Yawn is another record of furrowed-brow indie-rock from a man who always has a lot on his mind. The often-lengthy runtimes - most of the ten tracks here are over five-minutes - give Ryder-Jones the space for slow builds and thoughtful meditations on life. Musically the LP is frequently reminiscent of Elbow, Idlewild and Frightened Rabbit.

West Kirby County Primary

Ex-Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones wrote and recorded 'West Kirby County Primary' in the bedroom he grew up in at his Mother’s house. The album, his third, was then given some TLC at Liverpool’s Parr Studios. The lyrics are personal to the point that you feel you are listening in when you shouldn’t be. The melodies are soft and gentle with memorable choruses. The album is perhaps most reminiscent of the recent Hooton Tennis Club LP which he produced. He has also played as a live guitarist with Arctic Monkeys and produced The Wytches recently.
