Raw Cuts # 1 / Raw Cuts # 2

Motor City Drum Ensemble
Send A Prayer EP

Motor City Drum Ensemble is the brainchild of musician and label-owner Danilo Plessow, and in 2013 he refocusses the project to get in line with the kind of aesthetic he showed in his 2011 DJ-Kicks compilation - crate-digging samples and raw emotion are the watchwords on the four-track Send a Prayer EP.

Motor City Drum Ensemble
Raw Cuts # 3 / Raw Cuts # 4

You go to Motor City Drum Ensemble when you want classic-sounding and impeccably-crafted disco-house. None of the producer’s releases embody his sound more than the Raw Cuts series. Numbers 3 and 4 are exquisitely moody DJ tools, their rhythmic keyboards and choppy vocal samples sliding in and out of languidly jacking drum grooves. Peers like Moodymann and Soundstream would be mighty happy to have come up with some stuff like this.

Well, they've all had a repress, so snap up the whole series if you're quick! This is the most recent volume, most recent meaning 2009.

Tony Allen / Motor City Drum Ensemble
Dekmantel 10 Years 10.2

Dekmantel’s tenth-birthday vinyl series rounds out with possibly the strongest release of the lot. Tony Allen’s 1999 Afro-futurist masterpiece ‘Asiko (In A Silent Mix)’ stands with the best of anything that the Afrobeat legend has done in his long career. Conjuring the sort of lights-low groove that Theo Parrish was knocking up at the time, Allen coos over a fractured-yet-focussed instrumental that stands up to the Miles Davis comparison of its title. Serial drum machine-botherer Motor City Drum Ensemble slaps a kick on it for an additional club-friendly edit.

Selectors 001 - Motor City Drum Ensemble

Dekmantel launch their Selectors series with Detroit house, funk and disco encyclopedia Motor City Drum Ensemble. The tracks on this unmixed double vinyl LP and CD represent the obscurest and most essential tunes from his collection. Boogie synths, soulful house and deep disco you’ve never heard before, are all present.  MCDE’s marathon DJ sessions are legendary and this is rare glimpse in his record bag.
