Devonte Hynes
Queen & Slim (Original Motion Picture Score)

I've said it before about Devonte Hynes (Blood Orange, Lightspeed Champion etc etc)  that he gets where water won't. Last year alone he released a Blood Orange 'mixtape', directed a video for Beck and got a place in a list of the 100 Most Creative People. Now he's onto soundtracks and his first stab is for this American crime drama that follows to African Americans after they go on the run after killing a cop.

Blood Orange
Angel's Pulse

Oh here he is again. He gets where water won't....and stop sprawling so much on the sleeve. Sit up straight man. Maybe he has good reason to be tired as this mixtape release comes just months after his previous album proper Negro Swan. So it's being marketed as a mixtape rather than an album which seems to mean that it is an addendum of sorts to his last record - a series of sketches and ideas made in the months since. There's guests such as Toro Y Moi and Porches helping out.

Blood Orange
Negro Swan

Devonte Hynes has explored punk in his teens with Test Icicles, orchestral pop under the name of Lightspeed Champion, and as Blood Orange, perhaps his most successful and critically acclaimed project, he has made four albums underpinned by R’n’B and electronica. Negro Swan, his latest, explores depression - his own and other people's - along with the anxieties suffered by LGBT community and people of colour. LP and CD on Domino.

Blood Orange
Freetown Sound

Freetown Sound is the third album by Blood Orange aka Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion, Test Icicles). It follows on from 2011’s Costal Grooves and 2013’s critically acclaimed Cupid Deluxe. Hynes took on the Blood Orange moniker after moving to New York in the mid 2000s. He soaked up the city’s musical heritage to create the intense yet delicate funky pop to which he has become accustomed. On Domino.

Blood Orange
Cupid Deluxe

Once a Test Icicle, later a Lightspeed Champion, Dev Hynes really started coming into his own with his third project Blood Orange. It is inspired by his move to Manhattan and contains guest appearances from the likes of Skepta, David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) and the bloke from Kindness. Slick and smooth soulful pop, R&B and electronica.

Blood Orange
Coastal Grooves

Dev Hynes had already been in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion by the time his debut as Blood Orange came around in 2011. It turned out to be his most successful incarnation to date with later albums such as Cupid Deluxe making him something of a critics darling. But here was where it all started as Hynes used post-punk, soul and disco to tell the story of New York City in the 1980s and the characters who inhabited it.
