Earthling Society
Sci-Fi Hi-Fi

Given that Sci-Fi Hi-Fi is pretty much the perfect space-rock album title it’s kind of surprising that it took until 2009 for a band to come up with it. Earthling Society did the name justice, turning in an LP of ornate prog that drew heavily on motorik Krautrock, Spacemen 3 and The Flaming Lips. To celebrate Sci-Fi Hi-Fi’s tenth birthday The Weird Beard have got Fred Laid to give the record a new mix for their limited-edition reissue.

Earthling Society
MO - The Demon

Riot Season’s the name, loud music’s the game. To a roster that includes The Cosmic Dead, Bad Guys and Art Of Burning Water they now add Leeds College Of Music group Earthling Society. MO - The Demon is an unofficial soundtrack to a Shaw Brothers flick entitled The Boxer’s Omen. The plot is something to do with kung-fu and shrooms and black magic, and of course that means we have a psych rock record to contend with here. Santana (ooh err) and Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis (better) are cited as influences.

Earthling Society
Ascent To Godhead

To coincide with their Zen Bastard release of revisted old compositions Earthling Society  return to Riot Season with a full length of new improvisations. Ascent To Godhead is a more raucous take on the psychedelic/space rock with cacophonous free jazz at its heart, less of a journey inwards but out. Limited pressing.

Earthling Society
Zen Bastard

Taking material from their first two albums, Earthling Society return with an injection of energy and grunt previously missing, sending gritty space rock timbres hurtling into a fizzing stratosphere. The UK outfit have received praise from luminaries of the scene and evidently have responded with this slab of wax, issued by Drone Rock Records and continuing the band’s partnership with very decent independent labels. Those seeking the thrills of fuzz, splashy drums and ever deepening levels of wide eyed psyche will be in good hands.

Various
Magnetic North

Showcasing some of the north of England’s finest contemporary psych groups, developing on a tried and tested formula with a fresh approach. Spider-webbing Manchester, Chester, Newcastle and Fleetwood with songs by Dead Sea Apes, Vert:X, Blown Out, and Earthling Society. Good to hear what the young bloods are up to.

Superfjord / Earthling Society
Coltrane

The fluorescent sounds of Superfjord continue to have their day in the sun with yet more jazz interpretations. Following on from his version of 'A Love Supreme', he's joined by Earthling Society (who've tried their hand at jazz harpist Alice Coltrane's 'Journey In Satchidananda' in their time. Here, they offer up a tribute to the jazz couple with this split 7" of both covers.
