Michael Chapman
True North

Yorkshire Folk legend Michael Chapman has been releasing albums since 1969 on fairly consistent basis, in terms of quality and quantity, barring the odd gap here and there. True North is his latest offering and the follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed album, 50. He is loved by the likes of Thurston Moore and Steve Gunn, the latter just happens to have produced and played guitar on this record. Other guests include fellow folk legend Bridget St. John and pedal steel player BJ Cole. LP and CD on Paradise of Bachelors.

Michael Chapman
Fully Qualified Survivor

If anyone could be described as a Fully Qualified Survivor it's Michael Chapman. He can't have known that though when he recorded this album in 1970. This one showcases Chapman's acoustic troubadour side with a series of British folk rock that is up there with the best of the genre. Also features an early appearance from Mick Ronson before he was nabbed by Sir David Bowie.

Michael Chapman
LIVE VPRO 1971

This Dutch radio recording offers a rare chance to hear the Yorkshire folkie onstage in the early years of his career. Accompanied only by bassist Rick Kemp, the singer / guitarist performs loose and laid-back takes on tracks from his then-current albums on the Harvest label. Both CD and red vinyl versions include a download of the entire rambling 90-minute set.

Hiss Golden Messenger & Michael Chapman
Parallelogram A La Carte

Three Lobed Recordings Parallelogram was a nice five-LP collection released in 2015, putting amazing artists from the contemporary underground scene onto either side of a split LP. This release (now available as a stand-alone album, pairs Yorkshire folk-guitar veteran Michael Chapman with California’s Hiss Golden Messenger for some real goodness.

Michael Chapman
Playing Guitar The Easy Way

Michael Chapman is a folk guitarist of some repute. So much so, his work is frequently mentioned in the same breath as Bert Jansch, Roy Harper and John Martyn. Chapman also discovered guitarist Mick Ronson, known for his work with David Bowie. Playing Guitar The Easy way is genuinely a tutorial record and even comes with a 20 page booklet with notation. This album is for guitar nerds and Michael Chapman Fans alike. Playing Guitar The Easy Way is available on CD.

Michael Chapman
50

Yorkshire folk guitarist Michael Chapman is one of those musicians who is just simply extremely good at his job: his finger-picking style is endlessly engaging. New album 50, commemorating five decades of career, is his ‘American record’, on which he is joined by US allies like Steve Gunn and Jason Meagher (No-Neck Blues Band). Old songs and new songs, played American style. Released by Paradise Of Bachelors.

Michael Chapman
Solo Acoustic Vol. 11 - Homages

Michael Chapman is a man who has spent (as of this year) 50 years in an intimate relationship with the guitar, and he can carve out gorgeous magic with it at the drop of the hat. He also knows his history: this album is a set of 8 instrumental homages to guitarists like John Fahey and Jack Rose. Volume 11 of Vin Du Select Qualite’s Solo Acoustic series.

Michael Chapman
Savage Amusement

Savage Amusement is Michael Chapman’s 8th album and was recorded in 1976. It finds Chapman’s folk guitar stylings augmented by fellow guitarists Tim Renwick (Al Stewart) and Andy Latimer (Camel) whilst the rhythm section is supplied by drummer Keef Hartley and bassist Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span). Peter Wood (Al Stewart) and Muscle Shoals session player Leo LeBlanc complete the band on keys and pedal steel respectively.

Michael Chapman
Fish

Michael Chapman, the old folk guitarist from Leeds, has had a bit of a career renaissance of late. He has a long list of admirers from the American alternative music scene such as Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile, Will Oldham and Bill Callahan, which has probably helped. He is about to turn 75 so what better way to celebrate than release a new album, Fish.

Michael Chapman
Window

Window had always been Michael Chapman’s one that got away. A masterpiece that was coming along according to plan, but never finished properly and thus never released with his blessing. Reminiscing like a fifty year-old at a high school reunion, Chapman’s gone back and remastered the album for all true believers.

Michael Chapman
The Polar Bear

Improv folk artist Michael Chapman comes through with another of his free form releases, this one following-up the resilient 'Pachyderm', which relied on one steady chord to create a minimal ambient landscape. 'The Polar Bear' brings in flourishes on other acoustic instruments such as piano and cello, while still maintaing Chapman's sparse guitar overtones.

Michael Chapman
Live At Folk Cottage, Cornwall 1967

Michael Chapman is a house name in the UK's folk underground scene, having collaborated with acts as renowned as Hiss Golden Messenger, with whom he has recently made a split record. 'Live At Folk Cottage' unearths his earliest recordings, taken from a 1967 live show in Cornwall. Chapman was oblivious to the recordings existence, calling the Treehouse 44 release of the record something he "had no idea [he] had made!". These early songs have hints of Chapman's blues influence, but also take on more standard covers, such as a cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day". Apparently, Tree House have left the original recordings well alone, except for occasionally re-tuning the guitar, so you don't have to.
