Michael Chapman
Americana

For someone born in Hunslet Michael Chapman certainly has a solid knowledge of the music of the deep South of the United States. The esteemed guitarist made two albums of superbly crafted fingerpicking folk and alt country in the early 2000s and here picks his favourite tracks for a single album vinyl release. Chapman has written music in many styles but it could be argued that this is his most affecting.

Michael Chapman
True North

Yorkshire Folk legend Michael Chapman has been releasing albums since 1969 on fairly consistent basis, in terms of quality and quantity, barring the odd gap here and there. True North is his latest offering and the follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed album, 50. He is loved by the likes of Thurston Moore and Steve Gunn, the latter just happens to have produced and played guitar on this record. Other guests include fellow folk legend Bridget St. John and pedal steel player BJ Cole. LP and CD on Paradise of Bachelors.

Michael Chapman
Fully Qualified Survivor

If anyone could be described as a Fully Qualified Survivor it's Michael Chapman. He can't have known that though when he recorded this album in 1970. This one showcases Chapman's acoustic troubadour side with a series of British folk rock that is up there with the best of the genre. Also features an early appearance from Mick Ronson before he was nabbed by Sir David Bowie.

Michael Chapman
LIVE VPRO 1971

This Dutch radio recording offers a rare chance to hear the Yorkshire folkie onstage in the early years of his career. Accompanied only by bassist Rick Kemp, the singer / guitarist performs loose and laid-back takes on tracks from his then-current albums on the Harvest label. Both CD and red vinyl versions include a download of the entire rambling 90-minute set.

Hiss Golden Messenger & Michael Chapman
Parallelogram A La Carte

Three Lobed Recordings Parallelogram was a nice five-LP collection released in 2015, putting amazing artists from the contemporary underground scene onto either side of a split LP. Fish

Michael Chapman, the old folk guitarist from Leeds, has had a bit of a career renaissance of late. He has a long list of admirers from the American alternative music scene such as Thurston Moore, Kurt Vile, Will Oldham and Bill Callahan, which has probably helped. He is about to turn 75 so what better way to celebrate than release a new album, Fish.

The Polar Bear

Improv folk artist Michael Chapman comes through with another of his free form releases, this one following-up the resilient 'Pachyderm', which relied on one steady chord to create a minimal ambient landscape. 'The Polar Bear' brings in flourishes on other acoustic instruments such as piano and cello, while still maintaing Chapman's sparse guitar overtones.

Michael Chapman
Live At Folk Cottage, Cornwall 1967

Michael Chapman is a house name in the UK's folk underground scene, having collaborated with acts as renowned as Hiss Golden Messenger, with whom he has recently made a split record. 'Live At Folk Cottage' unearths his earliest recordings, taken from a 1967 live show in Cornwall. Chapman was oblivious to the recordings existence, calling the Treehouse 44 release of the record something he "had no idea [he] had made!". These early songs have hints of Chapman's blues influence, but also take on more standard covers, such as a cover of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day". Apparently, Tree House have left the original recordings well alone, except for occasionally re-tuning the guitar, so you don't have to.
