Duvet-strength warm ambient from Wil Bolton, whose previous records for the likes of Eilean, Home Normal and Sound in Silence have served as handcrafted comfort. Mastered by dronefather Ian Hawgood, Night Paths sees a return to Bolton's setup of processed guitar, synths and loops, all coming together in one woozy, snoozy textural mass.

Super limited Mini CD, including printed photographs taken by the artist of the urban landscape surrounding Anguk Station in Seoul, South Korea. Transportive ambient music constructed from a field recording made near the station, manipulated and stacked with guitar pedals, old crusty synthesisers, and loops. In a similar vein to 2010's Amber Studies which beautifully captured the mood of Krakow.
Eight years into their collaboration, Wil Bolton and Home Normal main-man Ian Hawgood have finished their first full-length album. Transparencies is a tender release full of intimate interplay of instruments and sounds: Bolton and Hawgood are perfectly suited to one another, sharing a subtle melodic approach. Released on Home Normal in a limited edition of 500 CDs.
Wil Bolton built this album out of tantalising materials: most sounds here are either field recordings from the streets of Tallinn or “loops I lifted from the quietest sections of old dusty charity shop records”. All this was reprocessed, rearranged, and rounded off with instrumental tracks to form Inscriptions. Released on Dronarivm.
Some subtle expansions from Wil Bolton. Whorl is a series of slow burning ambient compositions from the multi-medium artist. The tracks blend some acoustic instruments and sounds with deeply soft electronics to create an ethereal dream zone experience. Definitely one for the Eno heads. Out on CD from Sound In Silence and limited to 200 copies.
Wil Bolton takes acoustic and organic found sounds and turns them over and over until they're ambient compositions. 'Bokeh', which refers to the concept of "blurring quality", is a good way to sum up this record, in which you can hear snippets of field recordings being manipulated into long-form arrangements. The title track shows off Bolton's interest in making music that is "out of focus", featuring percussion that is scattered around the track and rings with the same devotion to ambient. Recommended if you like the pretty wilderness type of drone music, or have ever watched the movie Upstream Color.
