Hieroglyphic Being
A Synthetic Love Life Vol 3

More astral acid from Hieroglyphic Being here. A Synthetic Love Life Vol. 3 contains four further wedges of Jamal Moss’s idiosyncratic club tackle. Anyone familiar with the producer’s style will know that there’s no-one who can take the old Midwest house/techno sounds to strange new places quite like Hieroglyphic Being (maybe the closest competitor is Afrikan Sciences, but he doesn't have the dancefloor rigour of Moss). A Synthetic Love Life Vol. 3 proves that all over again while also ratcheting up the tempo a little at times - the opening and closing cuts sound like juke on the moon.

Hieroglyphic Being
A Synthetic Love Life Vol 1

Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss has one of the most distinctive style of anyone working in electronic music today. On A Synthetic Love Life Vol 1 (the first of nine) is Moss at his best. Acid techno that's detailed and frenetic in a way that only one Aphex Twin can match. Moss is also a master of polyrhythms, on these four tracks they spiral out like fractals.

Hieroglyphic Being
A Synthetic Love Life Vol 2

All-round dance music legend Hieroglyphic Being is releasing the second in his A Synthetic Love Life series. If the last edition is anything to go by, it's sure to be chock-a-block with pounding house rhythms, experimental electronics, and twisted, distorted percussion sounds. We look forward to the rest in this series.

sɪŋkrɪtɪzəm
Our Souls Are In The Hands Of The Translator

Arcola Records (Nkisi, Rian Treanor) drop a new 12” from Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being under his new sɪŋkrɪtɪzəm alias. Our Souls Are In The Hands Of The Translator has comes through with two intriguing bits of cosmic acid. ‘Impoverished Spirits’ is a perky, star-gazing and vaguely two-stepping roller that hits its stride about halfway through, while lengthy B-side ‘Bilal’ is an obtuse burbling DJ tool.

Gherkin Edits

Jamal Moss (aka Hieroglyphic Being) is releasing a single called Gherkin Edits and, if his past work is anything to go by, it's certain to be a club-ready, dirty, funky beast of a tune. His 2017 album '4 This Is Living That Gherkin Life' is a classic techno record that's full of distorted beats and fizzy basslines, hopefully 'Gherkin Edits' is more of the same. For fans of Blawan and Randomer.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio
Journey Through The Outer Darkness

The incredibly prolific Hieroglyphic Being (and technically also his pseudo-backing band Truth Theory Trio) drops a new mini-LP. Journey Through The Outer Darkness has its origins in a 2016 festival performance. Upon seeing Jamal Moss’ show, the folk at Hivern Discs (John Talabot, Pional) became dead set on releasing the audio. Moss subsequently cleaned up eight of the cuts from that set for this release. As we’ve come to expect from Hieroglyphic Being/Moss, Journey Through The Outer Darkness is astral Detroit techno par excellence.

JAI/MAHL (Jamal Moss / Hieroglyphic Being)
#DontjusttalkaboutitbeAboutIt

Sneaky release from Jamal Moss (better known as Hieroglyphic Being) under his JAI/MAHL alias. One of the most dependably interesting artists in electronic music, pretty much everything he does is worth listening to. #DontjusttalkaboutitbeAboutIt is a bit more conventional than what he's known for, but this acid is no less potent.

Reflection Series #3

Jamal Moss, the human being behind the Hieroglyphic Being, applies his special techno technique to three tunes by Public Image Limited, Kissing The Pink and Bigod 20. Perhaps not what you might expect Jamal to be delving into, but of course he totally knows how to re-work the material into his own richly hard-jacking style. 12” on Medusa Edits.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Replicant Dream Sequence (Blue PA14 Series)

Following up his loving tribute to all things innovative in the jazz world from classic Blue Note records onwards on 'The Red Notes', Jamal Moss releases The Replicant Dream Sequence (Blue PA14 Series) under his foremost Hieroglyphic Being alias.  Moss visited the late Bob Moog's Sound Lab at the tail end of 2016 and the Chicago house music innovator tested the classic and futuristic machines to their oscillating limits. Prismatic Afro-Futurism never sounded so Moogy, so groovy. Limited edition LP and CD on Moog Recordings Library.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Language of Strings

A nat’s crochet after the drop of new Hieroglyphic Being LP The Red Notes via Soul Jazz, the one born Jamal Moss presents this selection of ‘audio memoirs’ via his own Mathematics label. The Language Of Strings is another release of excellent, eloquent Midwestern techno from one of its finest exponents.

Acid Taken Over

The man better known as Hieroglyphic Being presents five tracks from his self-released, silver envelope-encased Acid Attacks tape, plus an extra unreleased cut. This music has all the squelchy hallmarks of acid, but twisted into surprising and exciting new forms. Very hard, uncompromising and avant garde stuff. Double vinyl.

The Sun God
The Anticipatory Organization

Described in the press release as 'three rousing tracks to stir the attention' (whatever that means), this record is probably one you're going to want to listen to should you need to have your attention stirred (apparently). It's worth noting that amongst the attention related jokes that these three tracks are actually pretty cool...like the album art. The Sun God is, of course, Chicago's finest - explorer of rhythmic cubism Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Red Notes

Prolific producer and DJ Jamal Moss puts out another record under his primary Hieroglyphic Being alias. He expanded his horizons with a collaborative album We Are Not the First in 2015, learning from and working directly with Marshall Allen and JITU Ahn-Sahm-Buhl. He follows it up with a record orbiting the same world: The Red Notes plugs in to the legend and legacy of Blue Note, in particular its hardest shredders Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane, marrying their innovations with Chicago house.

Hieroglyphic Being, Sarathy Korwar & Shabaka Hutchings
A.R.E. Project

Ever-prolific techno stargazer Hieroglyphic Being continues his endless trajectory on a collaboration with drummer Sarathy Korwar, who has previously made records involving both Sidi folk music and electronic fusion. Also on the record is saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, the three artists playing without queues for two and a half hours and seeing what comes out. These four tracks offer an explosive set.

Jamal Moss presents R2 Underground
The Walls

Jamal Moss, the Hieroglyphic Being himself, presents a fine cut from a live performance in Zurich on the A-side of this, the one hundredth release of the Mathematics label! Over on the B-side, we get to enjoy a ‘Paradise’ mix and an ’Ocean To Ocean’ version from Blake Ronan. The Walls is a 12” release, strictly limited in numbers.

The Northside Revival

Jamal Moss, the human being behind the Hieroglyphic Being, applies his special techno technique to three pieces of music by old industrial greats: SPK, Severed Heads and Nitzer Ebb. While this might seem a surprising move for Jamal, he totally knows how to re-work those hammering industrial rhythms into his own hard-jacking style. 12” on Medusa Edits.

Reflection Series #2

Jamal Moss, the human being behind the Hieroglyphic Being, applies his special techno technique to three pieces of music by The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie & The Banshees and Fad Gadget. Not what you might expect Jamal to be delving into, but of course he totally knows how to re-work the material into his own hard-jacking style. 12” on Medusa Edits.

Africans With Mainframes
Faces of Africa II

Africans With Mainframes is the ever-potent pairing of Noleian Reusse with Jamal Moss, aka the Hieroglyphic Being himself. With the twin influences of cosmic drift of outer space on one side and the hard-jacking thud of Chicago’s basements on the other, Africans With Mainframes just can’t help but make super-compelling super-house, as they do on Faces of Africa II. 12” on Mathematics.

The Sun God
Same Beings, Same Experiences, Same Worlds

Chicago legend Jamal Moss’s best-known alias is Hieroglyphic Being, but the man just can’t stop sprouting tracks and identities to go with them. As The Sun God, he here presents two cuts of good-time technoish electronics, powered by a deliciously overdriven (to the point of distortion) drum machine. Same Beings, Same Experiences, Same Worlds is out on Bio Rhythm.

Hieroglyphic Being
This Isn't Your Typical 90's Era Techno / IDM Revisionist View

A the title claims on This Isn't Your Typical 90's Era Techno Hieroglyphic Being brings two storming tracks that aren’t just looking back at the birth and growth of rave culture and appropriating but taking it on and using it’s tremendous freedom of creativity to unleash these free thinking techno slammers. Techno centrists beware.

The Faces of Drums
Let Go & Release Yourself EP

Cosmic Gherkin Acid from The Faces of Drums, the pairing of the killer producers Steve Poindexter and Jamal Moss (aka Mathematics label boss and the Hieroglyphic Being himself). Of course, these dudes can craft irresistible body-jerkers in their sleep, so all three tracks on the Let Go And Release Yourself EP are crucial. 12” on Mathematics.

Hieroglyphic Being and The Configurative Or Modular Me Trio
Azimuthal Equidistant

The Hieroglyphic Being returns, apparently backed up by The Configurative Or Modular Me Trio, although whether that is a real outfit or just another bit of tasty pseudonym fun is anyone’s guess. Point is, the three tracks of Azimuthal Equidistant have the direct-line analogue space-house power you want from your Hieroglyphic Being, no problems there. 12” on Mathematics.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Disco's Of Imhotep

Jamal Moss has never been shy with releasing music (how many aliases does he have again?), but word is that new Hieroglyphic Being full-length The Disco’s Of Imhotep is a proper statement, worth serious attention. It certainly has that hypnotic blown-out Being vibe, pitched towards dancefloors somewhere in between a Chicago basement and the outer cosmos. Out on Ninja Tune spin-off label Technicolour.

The Faces of Drums
Do U Like The Way It Feels

Old-school Gherkin Acid from The Faces of Drums, the pairing of the veteran producers Steve Poindexter and Jamal Moss (aka Mathematics label boss and the Hieroglyphic Being himself). Of course, these dudes can craft irresistible body-jerkers in their sleep, so Do U Like The Way It Feels is high-grade material. 12” on Mathematics.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio
The 42 Laws Of Maat

Experimental and verging psychedelic house tracks from Hieroglyphic Being, in collaboration with the so-called The Truth Trio, who - it is entirely possible - may not actually exist. Heavy hitting distorted kicks which compress the fuzzed out melodies and piano riffs that lay beneath, and dirty analog synths  and two not arpeggiators battle for precedence.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Fourth Dimensions of a Nubian Mystic

Recently voted "The Worst DJ Of All Time" by some disappointed club-goers who couldn't deal with how real he was, Hieroglyphic Being continues to do literally whatever he wants with another smattering of good old acid. This 12" continues to prove Jamal Moss a titan of whatever he wants, with jazz percussion on the b-side and the same old house prowess. 'The Fourth Dimensions of a Nubian Mystic' is pretty good for the worst DJ of all time.

Africans With Mainframes
Faces of Africa

Releases from Jamal Moss (aka Hieroglyphic Being) under any of his working aliases is always welcome. Africans With Mainframes is his project with fellow afrofuturist space-electro explorer Noleian Reusse, and Faces Of Africa finds them firing off in all directions. 12” vinyl release on Mathematics.

I.B.M
Bill Killed

What can we say about this one? The artist of this track remains firmly anonymous (answers on the back of a postcard?), although if you already know the original ‘Kill Bill’ by I.B.M. you’ll know that this is something to be excited for. Bill Killed is yet more aggressive than the original, can you believe it? Pressed as a one-sided white label 12”.

Hieroglyphic Being
The Electronic Belt

The EP is made up of three choice cuts from last years “Man With The Red Drum” transmission with each track bearing the signifiers of Jamal’s rough and distinctive production; melodies twisting themselves into psychedelic wormholes, raw kicks and toms that hit as hard and tight as walnuts. Yellow vinyl edition in 5 different coloured disco bags, mastered for vinyl by Stephen Bishop (Basic House / Opal Tapes).

The Acid Documents

Previously only available as a CD of only 100 copies, the fantastic Soul Jazz Records bring us The Acid Documents by Hieroglyphic Being on coloured double vinyl LP limited to 1000 copies. The music is a collection of odd-ball, DIY-electronica with echoes of Frankie Knuckles and Sun Ra. Strange, pulsating and enthralling electro.

Hieroglyphic Being & J.I.T.U. Ahn-Sahm-Buhl
We Are Not The First

Wow, if anybody ever wanted to see what could be achieved if Hieroglyphic Being expanded his consciousness into a collective hive-mind, here is the answer. His so-called J.I.T.U. Ahn-Sahm-Bul assembles a cast of remarkable musicians including Marshall Allen, Shelly Hirsch and Greg Fox: together, they have assembled this 2LP epic of free-electronic-space-synth-jazz-dance.

Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio
Keep Your Mind Open

Hieroglyphic Being joins forces with The Truth Theory Trio for a scuzzy tech jazz exploration that pushes Basic Channel tendencies into lo-fi territory whilst throwing in the blissful wandering characteristics of the likes of Drexciya. Keep Your Mind Open indeed. Out on vinyl 12” from Bedouin Records.

Hieroglyphic Being and The Configurative Or Modular Me Trio
The Seer Of Cosmic Visions

Electronic artist Hieroglyphic Being is nomadic with his genre styles, moving through the sounds of modern electronic techno and house into industrial and harsher noise aesthetics. He never stops making, releasing and inventing new music. 'The Seer of Comic Visions' can, as a result, act as a wee guide for the perplex, as it collects cuts from his discography so far that have been curated to make up a new album. There's lots of variation around the electronics here, going from heavy, distorted compositions to very chilled drones.
