Thelonious Monk
Mønk

Don’t confuse this one with Thelonious Monk’s 1964 studio LP of the same name. This version of Monk is a previously-unreleased live recording taped a year earlier, in Copenhagen, for Danish radio. Along with a stellar band made up of Frankie Dunlop, Charlie Rouse and John Orr, this recording is yet another casual masterpiece from the late, great pianist. Contains a super version of 'Nutty'.

Thelonious Monk
Monk's Music

This is a short and sweet collection of some of Thelonius Monk's most iconic and most well-known compositions, under forty minutes in length but bringing together tracks like "Abide With Me" and "Off Minor". 'Monk's Music' is part of Monk's time on Riverside Records and features a roster of excellent musicians making up his septet, including Ray Copeland on trumpet and John Coltrane himself playing tenor; listen closely on "Well, You Needn't" and you'll hear Monk handing over some instructions to Coltrane. A quick in-and-out jazz standard, this one.

Thelonious Monk
Monk's Dream

Monk's Dream was a 1963 album from the great pianist and band leader Thelonius Monk. It was his first album for the bigwigs at Columbia Records and now comes on 180g vinyl with a bonus CD of the Sunday at the Village Vanguard as well as updated liner notes. It's one of his most important recordings and cemented his reputation as a composer and performer of note.

Thelonious Monk
Palo Alto

Impulse! presents Palo Alto, a previously unreleased live recording by legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, from a concert in October 1968 that came about in curious circumstances. Organised by a student at the Californian college town’s high school named Danny Scher and hosted in the school’s parking lot, it features Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums.

Thelonious Monk
It's Monk’s Time

Thelonious Monk’s 1964 LP It’s Monk’s Time gets the reissue treatment courtesy of 8th Records. At this time in his career Monk was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. Many scorned his avant style on the keys, but when he turned in a relatively more sedate outing in the form of this record his die-hards railed against the album’s style. In the intervening years opinion has met in the middle, and now It’s Monk’s Time is praised for its deft arrangements.

Thelonious Monk
Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960

Languish in the fabulous music that Thelonious Monk recorded in 1959 for the movie Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The audio has never been officially released in its own right until now, but the high quality of this double CD release makes up for that colossal delay. Comes with a sixty-page booklet, packed with exclusive photos and liner notes. On Sam Records.

Thelonious Monk Quartet & John Coltrane
At Carnegie Hall

At Carnegie Hall shows the burgeoning talents of John Coltrane coming to the fore during his time with Thelonious Monk Quartet. Monk’s experience shows he’s got a real player in Coltrane whose solo playing displays an early version of his ‘Sheets of Sound’ improvisation style. Unearthed by accident at the Library of Congress, this is a treat for jazz fans. Double vinyl LP on Blue Note.

Thelonious Monk
Misterioso

Ah, Thelonious Monk. More distinctive a jazzman there is not. Even when obscured and peering from within the album sleeve of Misterioso, it’s still him alright. The music concurs; swinging brass, tinkling keys and shimmering cymbals shine across this 8 track LP of a live recording from 1958. Get in the groove man.
