cv313 Vinyl, CD & tapes by cv313 at Norman Records
Remasters and a first release of some of the demos Radius sent off to Deepchord around the turn of the millennium. Now being released by echospace [detroit] these lost scuzzy dub techno chuggers are an all too rare chance to get to listen to Radius. Make the most of it. Limited to 500 copies.
More deep explorations of the Echospace universe. Selected highlights from Phase90’s immersive Infinitati album have been re-imagined (one ‘Possession Dub’, one ‘Remake’ and one ‘Metamorphose’ to be precise) by the producer Intrusion, with excellent heavy results from the deep dub depths of the mixing board. 12” on echospace [detroit].
If you didn’t know yet, cv313 are also known as Echospace. The duo of Rod Modell and Stephen Hitchell have been leaders in the dub techno field for many a year now - so long, in fact, that they’re able to make new records out of jams they had nearly two decades ago. Glass City Sessions features reworkings of some tracks they played in abandoned asylum outside of Detroit back in 2000.

A real treat for any fans of Radius. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3] is the result of a whole years work restoring the music from its original tapes which had begun to decay. Despite all these tracks have been through, the result is as fresh as Radius has ever been. The second release of three.
Hooray for dub techno! The good people at echospace [detroit] have worked very very hard to rescue the aged original tapes that Radius recorded his interpolations on. As the name implies Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 3/3] is the third act in this labour of love. And the hard work has paid off, these tracks sound as good as ever.
Rod Modell is back in his long-running Deepchord guise with a long-awaited solo LP on Astral Industries. 'Immersions' comprises two beautiful, expansive long-form pieces, each adorning a side of the record. It's that wonderfully emotional, elegiac sound we're accustomed to: sparkling and elegant techno textures which wind and wend their way through deep caverns of dub. Submerged sounds that happily bubble to the surface. Also, just look at that sleeve art; another classic from the house of Astral Industries.
Ten years of variants, reworks, and redesigns from Radius. On Obsolete Machines [Variant Rewords] Stephen Hitchell takes dub techno to its Nth degree, and dubs out his own dub techno tracks. The amount of space he's found in these tracks is truly remarkable. FFO: Techno from very far away.
So you've just arrived back home from an epic night clubbing, limbs aching, heart pounding, with sweat drenched clothes you stagger home on the night bus while tucking into doner meat and chips, the thumping 4/4 beats still ringing in your ears and the disco biscuit in your blood stream is a long way from coming down so what you really need are some soothing beats and warm drones to help you drift into slumber, cv313 is just what the doctor ordered, let the ambient bliss of echospace drench you it's gentle embrace and float off down the flowing dream stream into sleepy land.......zzzzzzzzzz
They've released as many records as I've started save files on Pokemon Blue, and still Rod Modell and Stephen Hitchell graft. Yet another entry into their cv313 series sees them create longform "analog passages" that are likely immersive, blissful and ethereal, all staple vibes of their dub techno aesthetic. This one should tide you over 'til next week.
Further deep-space broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, a pseudonym of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. This is version 1.2 of Sequential Sleep, a long stretch of field recordings, tape-manipulation and electronics that drifts and hums like the background radiation of the universe. One to really sink into, and maybe sleep to too. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Detroit’s Echospace label finally unleash this thought-lost opus from cv313. Apparently literally adrift underwater in a flood, Dimensional Space was rescued and lovingly reassembled from four years worth of decrepit master tapes. Appropriately, this makes for murky and deeply meditative aesthetics explored over the course of a triple LP. Highly limited and easter egg-laden.

Extremely deep business from echospace [detroit] producer Phase90, who used field recordings from Detroit’s Masonic Temple in order to imbue the record with a supernatural darkness. Absonia, which was recorded for an art installation last year, is pitch-black ambient space dub, just the way you echospace [detroit] fans love it.
Rod Modell, who as DeepChord has been responsible for a colossal amount of quality dub techno over the years, here presents a book of photography for the first time. Dawn, Dusk, and Darkness contains personal photographs of Barcelona, and is accompanied by a CD of Barcelona field recordings and related audio moods by Modell. Book with CD on 13/Silentes.
Phase90’s album Infinitati was already a great example of the echospace [detroit] house sound, but this dubbed-out reworking by Intrusion might make it an even better one! As well as finding eight different ways to say ‘remix’ without saying ‘remix’, Intrusion has thoroughly spaced out the mix, using looping, tape manipulation and various desk business to reach even deeper than before.
Strange to hear allusions to places outside of Detroit on an echospace [detroit] release, but here we are with an album called Mediterranea, which contains faded traces of field recordings made on a Spanish holiday. The journey must have relaxed Rod Modell, because he has turned in a full CD’s-worth (72 minutes!) of sweetly drifting ambient warmth. Lovely stuff.
Wayward, slow-burning ghosts of 1990s Detroit dub techno, courtesy of Stephen “Echospace etc.” Hitchell’s retired Radius project, have been canonised at last on a public release. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration One] comprises seventy minutes of never-before-heard material, originally recorded on computerless hardware to 8-track cassette between 1993 and 2001, and now lovingly restored for your tech-noir daydreams. Sumptuous, pulsing sprawl themes channelled from the source.
You know you love that classic Detroit Deepchord sound. Follow Rod Modell on his latest trip into the far reaches of the cosmos, as expressed through sublimely ambient deep house. Northern Shores is a four track EP of perfectly blended pads, drums, field recordings and reverbs upon reverbs. 12” on Soma.
Deepchord really allows himself to expand his sounds here on this double-length LP, surely a perfect format for a producer with such a woozy, immersive ambient approach to dub techno. Auratones’ twelve tracks create a positive space for the listener to dance and / or dream in. Released as a 2LP on the Soma label.
Radius is yet another one of echospace head honcho Stephen Hitchell's many aliases - see also Intrusion, Phase90, Variant, Soultek. 'Obsolete Machines' includes some cv313 reshapes that will sooth and stroke your face, a bit like like the musical equivalent of a hot bath. We know what to expect from this dub techno craftsman, and we always know it'll be lovely.
The Campfire is the perfect setting for a certain kind of dubby ambient techno, being a space that allows the ravers to settle back and contemplate. Deepchord naturally has exactly what's needed for the circumstance, with three gorgeous deep cuts mixing synth pads and submerged rhythms with field recordings. 12” on Soma.
The echospace [detroit] label keeps on producing high-grade ambient techno in their own inimitable style. The Other Side, the latest material from cv313 (the pairing of Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell), is a single 60-minute track of space-dub coaxed from the mixing desk by your two ambient guides. Slow cosmic atmospheres. CD release packed in an imported Japanese sleeve.
Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell & Chris Troy)
The always fabulous Astral Industries label present the first new material in 22 years from Rod Modell (DeepChord, cv313) and the elusive Chris Troy as Waveform Transmissions. Their previous album of drifting, droning ambient came via Italy's Silent label in 1996, and then, nothing...
'V 2.0-2.9' is comprised of four eighteen minute cuts of serene ambient bliss, each luxuriously spread across a full side of vinyl. Housed in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve with artwork by Theo Ellsworth.
Slowly dragging you into the present with cv313. Live at Primary is a live recording broken down into ten tracks from Detroitian cv313 (aka Steven Hitchell). Composed of tunes, loops, samples, live instruments and all sorts of gubbins, this is a journey into the depths of techno. As it's live, all the glitches and mishaps add to the raw tension and energy through out the recording. Out on CD from Echospace [detroit].
Techno and dub artist Stephen Hitchell goes by many aliases, including the aptly named Intrusion, under which he released 'The Seduction of Silence' in 2009. Revered in its scene, the album is now getting a CD reissue through Echospace, in an attempt to chart the atmosphere and circumstances Intrusion made the album around (in other words: lots of outtakes and b-sides from those very same sessions).
The echospace [detroit] label keeps on producing high-grade ambient techno in their own inimitable style. The latest material from cv313 (the pairing of Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell) is a document of an airy live set that drifts and pulses and crackles. Close your eyes and lose yourself to the Land Of The Low Lying Clouds. Eco-friendly CD release.
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Thru The Cosmos is a series of pieces for modular synth, though perigee and apogee contain no look-at-me synth heroics whatsoever: this is deep, subtle, space-drift music, each piece stretching out over a full hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Echospace captured live in concert at the Detroit Paranormal Society party at Ghosts In The Sound mid-2013. Rod Modell and Steven Hitchell’s dubbed-out techno was in particularly fine form on this night, pushing the crowd into spacey reveries. With a mixture of reworked classics and new material, this is an excellent release from the core Echospace duo. CD on echospace [detroit].
cv313's "seconds to forever" gets an Echospace digital repress after its original mail order only limitation. You know that if it's curated by the Deepchord heads it's usually of the highest quality Detroit dubtechno pickings. No exception here. Rolling, spacious, dubbed out headphone listening from one of the genre's most highly regarded movers.
The echospace [detroit] label have always been keen on exploring deep inner states, but Shibuya Hypnagogia goes further than most of their releases. A601-2 (that’s Rod Modell of DeepChord by the way) explicitly intends that this 61 minute piece will induce a slow descent from wakefulness to deep sleep in the listener. Knowing his track record, it probably will. CD in a retro matte digipak.
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Thru The Cosmos is a series of pieces for modular synth, although please note that neither pallas or perseids contain any look-at-me synth heroics: this is deep, subtle, space-drift music, with each piece stretching out over a full hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
Further broadcasts from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Aurora’s Dream is apparently the culmination of two years work: this is precision-tooled deep-drift ambient techno of the highest order from a master of the form. Two different takes on the piece here, each lasting an hour. Double CD on echospace [detroit].
The broadcasts continue to emanate from the analogue sound-worlds of Variant, the more ambient project of Stephen Hitchell aka Intrusion, Phase90, Radius and half of cv313 alongside Rod Modell. Pyralis is an hour-long slab of cosmic ambience, with electronic loops and drones mixing with field recordings of a Michigan bonfire. Released by echospace [detroit] as a CD packed in an imported Japanese sleeve.
The source material for this release was a set of analogue modular synth recordings made in Detroit, mastered by the famed Ron Murphy. Then, while playing Live In Japan, cv313 pulled apart those recordings, carefully treating and reassembling them in response to the ecstatic movements of the dancers. Beyond The Clouds / Beyond The Sequence [Live In Japan] is out on echospace [detroit].
The track Seconds to Forever first surfaced in 2010, to the happiness of many dub-house ravers. This release features 3 re-workings of the original, 1 extra-dubby take from Intrusion and 2 different versions from Deepchord. The quality is high, and I bet cv313 is satisfied with how his track has grown up. Clear vinyl 12” on echospace [detroit].
These slices of the cv313 sonic experience were originally a part of the 2009 live album, but have now been remastered, reworked, and cherry-picked for their own release. One version is a special dubbed out mix, very spacious. Lost Sequence is bound to satisfy echospace [detroit] fans, especially as it is presented in handsome clear vinyl format.
Baring Stars is a new hour long slice of sound from cv313, recorded, we are told, live in the mix, with an all-analogue set-up. The name of the label releasing this album, echospace [detroit], describes cv313 very well: this is like Detroit Techno refracted back from some distant galaxy, echoed all off-kilter. Limited edition CD.
Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell aka cv313 are total release-nicks, this 12” featuring live cuts captured in Tokyo and Russia, just a few months on from their Live @ Primary set. The A-side is a alternate take on an earlier dub-techno workout from ‘07, whilst on the flip things get murkier and spacier. Echospace are to thank once again for bringing this one to the world.
Hypnotic techno that lives up to its title, Under A Starlit Sky by CV313 fuses luscious atmospheres with a mesmerising pulse to offer a deep listening experience. The GAS-like soundscapes will be familiar to Echospace followers, whilst the insistent analogue beat provides a new sense of urgency. Mixed from ¼” analogue tape at Alchemy Mastering. Out on vinyl 12” from Echospace [Detroit].
Pure dreamy hypnosis is once again at play with Fading Lights by CV313. An evocative analogue groove finds its way through the murk on the second Echospace 12” of 2014. The flip-side ‘Magenta’ sees fourteen minutes float by in an intoxicating trip. Out on ltd clear 12” vinyl from Echospace [Detroit].
Electronic musician Rod Modell is being celebrated in the new Echospace archival project, which seeks to unearth and contextualise the music of Modell's Deepchord alias. Modell was prolific under this alias, releasing eleven records in as many years from 2003-2014. The tracks that appear on '13/14/16' have been taken from various Deepchord singles between 2001-2003, and show off the influence Rod Modell has been to the Detroit electronic scene.
