Existential Void Guardian

The existential void has a new guardian. Liverpool trio Conan resume channelling the bloodthirsty energy of your favourite Cimmerian barbarian on this new one for Napalm Records. Packing dual vocalists and an indefatigable fund of drop-tuned riffs, it’s quite the furious, simmering work of doomy sludge.

Man Is Myth (Early Demos)

Liverpool’s Conan are one of the most consistently uncompromising doom bands to emerge in recent years. The trio’s austere brand of heaviness is in the Sleep tradition, with the battle fetish of High On Fire. In the wake of last year’s third album Revengeance, this compilation collects 2009 rehearsal recordings and studio material from 2012.

Conan have committed their filthy, ocean-sized sound to wax (and the slightly less cvlt compact disc) twice thus far- with more fetid output always on the horizon. First came the hulking mass of debut album Horseback Battle Hammer (Throne, Aurora Borealis), followed by a split with like-minded sludge-lords, Slomatics (Head of Crom, Burning World). In December 2011 Conan returned to the remote wilderness of Foel Studio, Wales and into the capable hands of producer Chris Fielding for their next album which is to be released on Burning World Records in Spring 2012.

Revengeance is the third album by Merseyside doom metal three piece Conan. The songs are wrapped in warm, down-tuned fuzz, crust-covered doom and monumental drone. However, this fuzzy sludge does not conceal how pissed off the band remain. Pressed on limited edition transparent red vinyl which is exclusive to the UK. On Napalm Records.

Conan / Slomatics
Conan vs Slomatics

Molasses thick doom metal on this split LP from Conan and Slomatics. Competing for who can play the loudest and largest riff the slowest, everyone’s a winner. Your appreciation of the cover, depicting a battle-hardened warrior riding a giant snail over a scarred dual-moon landscape, is probably a good indication of whether you will like the record or not. It’s great.
