Steve Gunn
Time Off

Originally released in that classic year of 2013 was Time Off by Steve Gunn. This was the first time the guitarist had made an album as part of a band. It sets his intuitive, blues-based playing amongst the accompaniment of a couple of excellent musicians who help shape one of his breakthrough albums. It has a loose Neil Young feel but is topped off by his breathy vocal technique which takes a fuller role than his more instrumental work of before.

Steve Gunn
The Unseen In Between

Guitar aces are always photographed with their guitar cases aren't they? Check the sleeve of this latest record by immersive psychedelic player and vocalist Steve Gunn. Touching his guitar case as if headin' off to the next two bit town that will appreciate his playin'. But Gunn is a lot more than just a folky guitar guy, and here he produces what is promised to be his most complex and emotional album yet, turning his thoughts inward to reflect on his own internal thought patterns.

Kurt Vile & Steve Gunn
Gunn Vile

This was initially released in limited quantities as part of Three Lobed's Parallelogram series but has since received a deserved wider release. The two musicians combine perfectly on songs by the likes of John Prine, Randy Newman and Nico, each bringing their distinct qualities to the plate. Harpist extraordinaire Mary Lattimore makes an appearance too.

Gunn-Truscinski Duo
Bay Head

Steve Gunn and John Truscinski loaded up their guitars, drums and synths once more for their third collaboration as a duo. The pair feel their way through mountains and canyons of electric melody, rumbling rhythms, and gnarlier abstractions, with a great loose organic feel throughout. Bay Head is out on Three Lobed Recordings.

Steve Gunn
Ancient Jules

Ancient Jules is taken from Steve Gunn’s recent album Eyes on the Lines. It’s a lovely little swaggering stroll through country-tinged American rock landscapes, with a message of taking it easy delivered alongside tasty guitar licks. The 12” also contains two non-album tracks to enjoy, ‘The Handshake’ and ‘The Soloist’. 12” single released by Matador.

Steve Gunn
Eyes On The Lines

Steve Gunn presents a sun-strained album of American songcraft, big on invented characters and the natural environment. The band he’s managed to assemble here is impressive: Norman harp favourite Mary Lattimore for starters, but also major talents like Nathan Bowles and Hans Chew. Eyes On The Lines is out on Matador Records.

Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers
Seasonal Hire

Steve Gunn continues to lead the charge for the resurgence of traditional American folk forms, with The Black Twig Pickers in tow. Seasonal Hire is a really gorgeous sounding record with zero twee about it. Rather, these are meditative, well-layered pieces of music, made by a group of people deeply in touch with their instruments.

Steve Gunn
Way Out Weather

Because we all need more country rock riffs and farmyard twang in our life, Steve Gunn has made 'Way Out Weather', a record that has these things in spades -- as well as, you know, actual songs. The tunes on 'Way Out Weather' have plaintive, hushed verses that curve into choruses with slight but potent melodies, offering a subtlety absent from his last record, 'Time Off'. Sometimes Gunn loses himself in the moment, soloing towards oblivion, but he'll always bring it back around.
