Journey In Satchidananda

Alice Coltrane is a jazz god. She was a graceful harpist and a superb trumpet player. Journey In Satchidananda, from 1970, sees her exploring the many-stringed axe bringing serenity, mysticism and spiritualism to the fore. Charlie Haden, known for his time in the game-changing Ornette Coleman Quartet, played bass. LP on Impulse.

Alice Coltrane
Transcendence

Significant changes in Alice Coltrane’s life happened in 1977, the year Transcendence was released. She became a Swamini, teaching Hindu and began performing and recording devotional chants. It does mean she more-or-less left jazz behind, but there's some bluesy organ on here! This was one of two LPs she released that year. Reissue LP on Antactica Starts Here.

Alice Coltrane
Transfiguration

After fully immersing herself in the Hindu tradition, which included her musical output, Alice Coltrane had one night of remembrance. It was 1978 at the University of California. She recorded, Transfiguration,  a live album which celebrated her jazz and R&B roots. Reissue LP on Antarctica Starts Here.

John Coltrane / Alice Coltrane
Cosmic Music

The first couple of spiritual jazz share the bandleader role here on Cosmic Music: two tracks are from John Coltrane’s final quintet, and two are from Alice Coltrane’s first bandleader session. With pedigree like that, and with  extra legends like Pharoah Sanders and Rasheid Ali on board, you know you are guaranteed some deep and fiery magic from this set. Cosmic Music is reissued by Superior Viaduct.

Alice Coltrane
Universal Consciousness

Universal Consciousness, originally released on Impulse! Records in 1971, is finally back on vinyl. Reissued on CD in 2002, a 12” reissue was highly overdue. Sprawling with free jazz and transcendental improvisation, Alice Coltrane can be heard at her peak. Time to take the aural express back to the '70s again!

Alice Coltrane
Lord Of Lords

Superior Viaduct with a superior record from a superior artist. Alice Coltrane has finally been getting her dues from the reissue game in recent years, and 1972’s Lord Of Lords is another crucial re-pressing. The last record of the trilogy that includes Universal Consciousness and World Galaxy, Coltrane takes charge of a sizeable orchestra here while also contributing piano and harp. Her combination of spiritual jazz, modal and avant-garde techniques and a simple quest for truth in music results in another wonderful record.

Alice Coltrane
World Galaxy

Impulse! and Back To Black reissue this sweeping 1972 album by Alice Coltrane. World Galaxy pairs Alice’s harp-led ensemble with a large string orchestra, meaning that her already cosmically free-flowing compositions spiral even further out. A deeply lush listen. Including versions of two John Coltrane favourites.

Alice Coltrane / Joe Henderson
The Elements

Joe Henderson’s career covered a lot of territory, including stints as sideman to Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. This 1973 album represented a new departure, being a foray into the tamboura and tabla-augmented cosmic jazz territory previously mapped out by Alice Coltrane, who plays piano and harp here. Highly recommended for fans of Alice and Pharoah Sanders’ work of this era. First time on vinyl since the initial release.

Alice Coltrane
A Monastic Trio

Perhaps the most accomplished harpist ever, Alice Coltrane's jazz was unique, moulding together the traditional aspects of the genre with free new innovations and suspenseful, almost droning capabilities. A Monastic Trio is her first work as a band-leader and is a shimmering, patiently unfolding work.
