Éliane Radigue
Occam Ocean 2

87 year-old Éliane Radigue is a trailblazing French electronic composer. She worked with modular synths but decided to take a new direction in the early ‘00s and compose for acoustic instruments. Composer Frédéric Blondy asked her to write for an orchestra, which took some convincing due to the enormity of the task. Ultimately she was convinced though, taken in by the rich sound of the orchestra, and Occam Ocean 2 is the result, performed by the 34 person strong French orchestra ONCEIM (translates to Orchestra of New Musical Creation), led by Frédéric Blondy.

Éliane Radigue
Œuvres électroniques

Esteemed French ambient composer Eliane Radigue is honoured with a mammoth set. Œuvres électroniques covers a good chunk of Radigue’s work in the second half of the 20th Century. Up until the year 2000 Radigue had spent thirty years exploring synthesiser composition, working largely with the ARP 2500. The pieces she made tend to shift slowly, with tones slipping slowly from aquatic gurgles to abrasive drones to eerie chords. They’re works that reward patience, and this bumper collection of her output allows the listener to get to know her work intimately. 16 hours of mind-bending pure drone incl. Chry-ptus, Ψ 847, Adnos, Les Chants de Milarepa, Jetsun Mila, Trilogie de la Mort etc.

Geelriandre / Arthesis

Travelling the world to play infinite early ambient/drone compositions at universities and museums, Eliane Radigue is one of the first pioneers of drone. Her works Geelriande and Arthesis are seemingly endless, patient, content to remain in a constant state of being. And now, for the first time, released on vinyl.

Songs of Milarepa

Radigue is a true pioneering giant of electronic and drone music, and these mid-eighties recordings capture her at her most mystically-inclined. Inspired by 11th century Tibetan poet and mystic Milarepa, this double CD is led by Radigue’s ARP synth, with vocal contributions from Robert Ashley and Lama Kunga Rinpoche, in English and Tibetan respectively.

Jetsun Mila

This 1986 recording is Radigue’s sonic evocation of the life story of the Tibetan poet and mystic also celebrated on Song of Milarepa. Whereas that album contained recitation in both English and Tibetan, this single 84-minute piece, spread over two CDs, is just the composer alone at her ARP synthesizer. Meditative electronic drone music at its immersive best.

Chry-Ptus

Éliane Radigue has had a long and distinguished career in the field of experimental electronics and drone. A 1971 piece which Radigue composed on New York University’s Buchla 100 synthesiser, Chry-Ptus was the first thing Radigue wrote for analog synthesiser. Though not her first work, Chry-Ptus arguably represents the beginning of Radigue’s journey in earnest - the record’s slowly-morphing drones, not dissimilar to her old studio pal Laurie Spiegel, certainly helped set the tone for Radigue’s subsequent work. Originally released as two cassettes that could be played either simultaneously or out-of-sync to create different phasing patterns, this new Important Records edition of Chry-Ptus combines the two on one slab o’ wax.
