Dutch imprint Konkurrent have this great little series called In The Fishtank where they give bands 48 hours of studio time and ask them to come out with an EP of new material. Some of the entries are one-act projects (Snuff, June Of 44), others match up acts like Sparklehorse and Fennesz or Low/Dirty Three. Perhaps the most intriguing collaborative In The Fishtank offering is The Ex and Tortoise’s 1999 set. The Ex’s lithe, lumbering post-punk style is embellished with all sorts of stylised sounds by the Chicago post-rockers. The result kind of brings to mind The Lounge Lizards if they were fronted by Pete Shelley.
