Paul Flaherty Vinyl, CD & tapes by Paul Flaherty at Norman Records
Steve Baczkowski / Chris Corsano / Paul Flaherty
The Dull Blade
Phwoar, a big juicy slab of that good heavyweight free jazz, courtesy of lightning-speed super-drummer Chris Corsano and the twin saxophone attack of Paul Flaherty and Steve Baczkowski. The Dull Blade mixes power-skronk with a surprising amount of swing: nice! Edition of 400 LPs on Feeding Tube Records.
The album art says it all, really: sax and drums. Paul Flaherty and Chris Corsano have been journeying in the free jazz world for a while now, and this collaboration, 'Low Cost Space Flights', captures them playing together at New Hampshire's Thing In The Spring Festival. The room the record was made in was picked for its echoing acoustics that allow Flaherty and Corsano's improvisations to bounce wildly off the walls. Both artists show off their musical athleticism and their innate knowledge of their instruments while creating a gloriously free-form mess.

Paul Flaherty is a no-fuckin’-messin’ free jazz saxophone guy perhaps best known for his noisy trio with Chris Corsano and C. Spencer Yeh, but Aria Nativa finds him entirely solo. He still brings it though, loaded up on energy and saxophone-shouts, a high power blast straight from one man’s soul. LP on Family Vineyard.
