Dean Wareham Vs. Cheval Sombre
Dean Wareham Vs. Cheval Sombre

A nice little project this: Dean Wareham, the voice of Galaxie 500, joins Cheval Sombre to record a selection of ten covers, all themed around Westerns. The material ranges from traditional numbers through Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, all the way up to The Magnetic Fields, and the performances are very nicely balanced.

Cheval Sombre
Had Enough Blues / Hitch A Ride

Hailing all the way from a record studio in Tennessee called Fat Elvis Records (brilliant name: funny, clever and sadly clouded in an element of truth), Cheval Sombre is releasing a short EP called Had Enough Blues / Hitch A Ride. The lyrics in both songs are a psychedelic folk scream at everything that has, so far (there's probably more to come), gone wrong in the world in 2018. Available on vinyl 7".

Static Fruit

Fruits de Mer and Static Caravan are two boutique labels with long-term vision and a deep engagement with their chosen fields of music. Here they share wax for the first time, each putting forward two acts: Art Of The Memory Palace and Cheval Sombre from the Caravan, Jack Ellister and The Insektlife Cycle from the Fruits. 7” of Static Fruit!

LUNA
Lonesome Cowboy Bill

Luna’s Dean Wareham hooked up with his friend Cheval Sombre to record an album of western themed songs. Lonesome Cowboy Bill is one of two 7” singles to be released by Feral Child. Throughout Dean Wareham’s career with Galaxie 500 and Luna, the influence of the Velvet Underground has been apparent. Here, with Luna, he doffs his cap by covering the Doug Yule-penned song from the Velvet Underground’s Loaded album. On side B, Cheval Sombre gives us his interpretation. The album is due in 2018, until then you can enjoy Luna's more recent LP A Sentimental Education.

Cheval Sombre
Madder Love EP

Cheval Sombre goes from mad on 'Mad Love', his psych rock record from two years back, to madder on 'Madder Love', an EP of totally different but hopefully recognisable remixes from that record. The song lifted is "Couldn't Do", the sustained folk ballad central to 'Mad Love'; it gets three reworks, courtesy of Justin Robertson, The Time And Space Machine (who spend some time doing some hypnotic looping) and Tom Furse of the Horrors, who fights drone with more drone. There's also "Someplace Slow" from Sombre himself, a respectfully stretched version of his record's tune "Someplace Else".
