Sunn O)))
Pyroclasts

We will look back at 2019 as the year in which Sunn O))) released as many album as they played chords. 'Pyroclasts' follows 'Life Metal' and is pitched as the earlier record's "shadow album". Presumably this means it will not stop until it has destroyed that which casts it. A bit like Dark Link in Zelda. Heavy and slow, you know the drill.

Cylene

Cylene, Cylene, Cylene, Cyleeeeeene, I’m begging you please don’t … hang on a minute, this thing doesn’t sound ANYTHING like Dolly Parton. We should have seen that coming really - an LP helmed by Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley and GRM director François J. Bonnet (aka Kassel Jaeger) was never going to be big on singalongs. It is big on sound, though. Cylene is full of thick, glacial, eerie drones that sit slap-bang in the middle of the uncanny valley.

Ambarchi / O'Malley / Dunn
Shade Themes From Kairos

Imagine if there was apocalypse right now and the only people left on earth were Oren Ambarch and Stephen O'Malley, and they had to repopulate the world with guitar drones. That's what happens in 'Themes From Kairos', more or less, with the two drone merchants on the bill scoring Randall Dunn's film. The two artists make an evocative soundtrack of guitar, loops and analogue synth.

Sunn O)))
Life Metal

Here they come again, churning away. This time slo-mo metallers Sunn O))) have recorded with grumpy recording engineer Steve Albini who, when answering the phone from the big hairy guys said "Sure, this will be fun". And fun it was as the band drafted in violin ace Hildur Guðnadóttir (Mum, Pan Sonic) to add textures and all sorts to the ever expanding brew. Also Anthony Pateras guests on pipe organ.

Stephen O'Malley / Anthony Pateras
Rêve Noir

The more avant Sunn-y man Stephen O’Malley here teams up with Anthony Pateras, a piano, organ and Revox tape machine player. This recording builds on a live set in Paris 2011, reconfiguring the drone-concrete material into yet more elaborate formations. Reve Noir has that dark heavy O’Malley core, but also pushes into lots of other cool directions. LP with an interview-packed booklet, on Immediata.

Gravetemple
Impassable Fears

Juicy heavy darkness here from Gravetemple, the experimental power trio of key Sunn O))) man Stephen O’Malley, terrifying Sunn O))) and Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar, and all-round sound wizard Oren Ambarchi. Impassable Fears is a welcome return, a record that throbs with ferocious metallic power and sharp minimalist sonic details. CD / LP editions on Svart.

Stephen O'Malley
Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs

Highly sought after and very limited second pressing of a solo performance by Stephen O’Malley. Member of drone lords Sunn O))), Æthenor, Khanate, and founder of Southern Lord and Ideologic Organ. His personal statement after the Hebdo attacks is anger towards facist and fundamental movements through his droning guitar and a huge stack of amplifiers.

Stephen O'Malley
Dread Live

Sunn O)))’s feedback architect Stephen O’Malley cranks the amps even louder on his solo vinyl LP Dread Live. This is an extended and extremely loud improvisation for solo guitar (though the colossal heaviness sounds like an army of guitarists). Relentless waves of heavy drones and squeals bombard the listener; the man has turned distortion into an artform.

End Ground

Drone-guitar-merchant Stephen O’Malley steps away from his wide array of collaborators (with Greg Anderson in SunnO))), with Peter Rehberg in KTL etc.) for a solo release, a document of a live set in Paris in 2013. End Ground sounds precisely as heavy-weighted and slow-growing as you’d expect. Second and final pressing on iDEAL Recordings in an edition of 250 copies.

Gruidés

Stephen O’Malley is known for his dark drone works with Sunn O))). Gruides is his first solo outing and his first orchestral piece. Gruides was commissioned by the French improvisational orchestra ONCEIM. It was recorded in St. Mary’s Church in central Paris - a venue where the acoustics lent themselves perfectly to the music. The 35-minute orchestral drone piece is technically demanding for the players and richly rewarding for its listeners.

Eternelle Idole

Another grand release from busy old art-metal droner Stephen O’Malley. Eternelle Idole is something a bit special: an original score for an ice skating piece spread over two LPs. O’Malley composes with modular synthesisers and electronics as well as guitars, and vocals play a very large role for an O’Malley production. Lusciously packaged from Shelter Press.
