Fire! Orchestra
Arrival

For those who haven't heard of Fire! Orchestra what you need to do is imagine a big band willing to channel all its resources into one thing: weight. Their previously resources have been heftier than most most metal releases, and though they've trimmed down from 28 to 14 members for Arrival it doesn't make them any less potent. Sublime in the way that music so rarely is. On Rune Grammofon.

Mats Gustafsson & Christian Marclay
Link

Link is a collaboration between free jazz/skronk specialist Mats Gustafsson and sound artist Christian Marclay. Gustafsson of The Thing and Fire! Orchestra is known for his deliberately and bloody-minded discordant approach which has seen him collaborate with the likes of Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke and Kieran Hebden. Marclay, a Swiss-American, makes sound collages using turntables. An exciting and off-the-wall collaboration. On AFJ-Series/Smalltown Supersound.

Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, Thurston Moore, Balazs Pandi
Cuts Up, Cuts Out

In 2016, the established powerhouse noise duo of Merzbow and Balasz Pandi teamed up not only with saxophone destructor Mats Gustafsson but also guitar-noise shredder Thurston Moore for an unholy improvised quartet show live in a church in Hackney. Cuts Up, Cuts Out offers up a pair of chunky extracts, and what fun they are. Vinyl release on RareNoise Records.

ZU & Mats Gustafsson
How To Raise An Ox

When it was released in 2006, How To Raise An Ox, the collaborative LP between Italian post-jazz crew Zu and Swedish saxophone master Mats Gustafsson, sounded like a line in the sand. Over a decade on and it still does. A freakish combination of free jazz, doom metal and noise rock that continues to inspire new acts. Re-released by Trost Records (Boneshaker, Stephen O’Malley).

Mats Gustafsson / Christof Kurzmann
Falling and Five Other Failings

Mats Gustafsson, the fierce sax exploder who shouldn’t need any introduction at all (The Thing and Fire! and everything else) spent time in the studio with Vienna electronic improviser Christof Kurzmann. Naturally, sparks flew all over the shop. Falling and Five Other Failings is released on CD and LP by Trost.

Piano Mating

Fire-blowing saxophonist Mats Gustafsson has been tweaking away at electronics for quite a while now, but this is the first time I’ve heard him step away from the reeds entirely. On Piano Mating he uses an obscure quasi-instrument called the Pianomate to craft two sides of hovering tonal drones: great, and unexpected stuff! Clear vinyl from X-Ray Recordings.

Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, Balazs Pandi, Thurston Moore
Cuts Of Guilt, Cuts Deeper

Roaming the plains of noise, Thurston Moore finally found some worthy companions in the likes of Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson and Balazs Pandi, who already released Cuts as a trio in 2013. By adding Moore’s guitar to the loudness, this group has truly become global. Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper promises to approach the painful at all times, with melodies buried beneath layers and layers of aural destruction.

Mats Gustafsson With John Russell & Phil Minton
A Duo(S)

The Skronk-Lord himself Mats Gustafsson, captured here on record alongside guitarist John Russell and wild gibbering vocalist Phil Minton! Prime free improvisation from some experienced players, performing together for the first time that I am aware of…? A Duo(S) is released on tasty translucent pink vinyl by the Polish label Bocian.

Thurston Moore & Mats Gustafsson
Vi Är Alla Guds Slavar

Vi Är Alla Guds Slavar consists of Thurston Moore with his experimental, ear-fudging costume on, teaming up with Mats Gustafsson. Mats contributes blown-out electronics and a little soprano Sax, whilst Thurston messes heartily with his guitar. Highly invigorating improvisations on LP in a screen-printed sleeve on OTOroku.

Merzbow/ Mats Gustafsson/ Balazs Pandi
Cuts

Japanese Noise Super-Maestro Merzbow has been playing out with Hungarian man-of-drums Balazs Pandi quite a lot recently, and on Cuts they are joined by, you guessed it, Mats Gustafsson, master of the super-noisy skronk sax. Sounds that will clean out your senses. Although that said, this feels more like three equal players in an improve context than a full Merzbow blow-out.
