Cabaret Voltaire
Chance Versus Causality

Chance Versus Causality is perhaps the most intriguing of all of Cabaret Voltaire’s records. After a gig in Brussels in 1979 the band were approached by Babette Mondini and asked if they would score a film she was working on at the time. Cabaret Voltaire made the soundtrack without ever watching the footage, sent off the tapes to Holland, and then … nothing. The trio never saw the film and, after a limited release, it basically disappeared from the record. Now the Chance Versus Causality OST has been resurrected by Mute for its first proper release.

Cabaret Voltaire
1974 - 76

Cabaret Voltaire dropped their debut LP in 1979, but they were going for a full six-years prior to the release of Mix-Up. The 1974-76 compilation collects some of the group’s home demos from their formative years. Rough around the edges, but you can hear Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson honing their pioneering sound in real-time here.

Chris Watson
Locations, Processed (Blue TB7 Series)

Chris Watson probably has the coolest CV of the original post-punk scene. Starting out as one of the founding members of Cabaret Voltaire, he has since become one of the world's premier recorders of nature, helping create meaningful soundscapes for David Attenborough's documentaries. On Locations, Processed he combines these practices, creating an audio odyssey using The Moog Sound Lab’s System 55 to celebrate the legendary Bob Moog.

Giacinto Scelsi, Chris Watson & Joe Browning
Scelsi EP

Giacinto Scelsi is a not-well-enough-known Italian composer who was keen on exploring music based around only one pitch. This Scelsi EP contains an impressive recording of one of his pieces, an insect-based field recording inspired by Scelsi from field-maestro Chris Watson, and a solo shakuhachi performance by Joe Browning. What a wonderfully unusual set. On SN Variations.

Framework Seasonal - Issue #3: Autumn 2012

Framework Seasonal is a quarterly series of releases that is dedicated to documenting explorations of the medium of field recording. For this special Autumn 2012 edition, a full DVD is given over to maestro of the field Chris Watson. The nature of the format means that this single audio recording, of sunrise in a rainforest in Borneo, is a full 2.5 hours long and in very high definition.
