William Elliott Whitmore
Kilonova

Chicago’s Bloodshot Records (The Mekons, Murder By Death) release an LP of covers by seasoned troubador WIlliam Elliott Whitmore. Whitmore COVERS (geddit?) a lot of ground on Kilonova. Some of the tunes here were written relatively recently - he opens with a version of The Magnetic Fields’ ‘Fear Of Trains’, for instance - while others date back to the Great Depression. However old the source material, Whitmore and his guitar always imbue these ten songs with a dose of whisky-soaked wisdom.

William Elliot Whitmore & Esme Patterson
Play Each Other's Songs

As advertised, this 7” features William Elliott Whitmore playing one of Esme Patterson’s songs, as well as Esme Patterson playing one of William Elliott Whitmore’s songs. They seem to have an affinity for one another, wrapping their voices around each other’s different styles while each remaining themselves. Play Each Other’s Songs is out on Bloodshot, in a limited edition.

William Elliott Whitmore
Radium Death

It’s folk-punk time. What a great crossover. William Elliott Whitmore gives us some gravelly voiced, thumping guitar blues. Radium Death is proper storytelling to a fast beat which requires a few stomping hillbillies, a couple of barrels of something strong and a few tyres for the kids to play with. Electric stuff.

William Elliott Whitmore
Ashes To Dust

William Elliott Whitmore drops a new LP on Southern Records (The Melvins, The National). When the album’s called Ashes To Dust and features a daguerreotype of a skull on the cover it’s usually safe to say that it’s not going to be a cheery listen. These tunes are a black-hearted blend of blues, folk and country.
