William Basinski Vinyl, CD & tapes from this artist at Norman Records

He's pretty famous, this one, and that's a weird thing to say about an ambient producer who isn't named Brian Eno. Enter William Basinski, a musical all-rounder with an interest in making slowly processed tape tunes. He started releasing music for ol...read more »

A Shadow In Time

William Basinski pulls another couple of tape loops out of his voluminous archives, this time containing sounds from the rare Voyetra 8 synthesiser. A Shadow In Time is devised as a tribute to ‘David Robert Jones’ (aka David Bowie), and is a typically gorgeous, slowly-expanding work of ...view item »

The Deluge

More glorious tape-loop-based minimal composition from William Basinski. The Deluge presents an alternative approach to the source material used on recent companion piece Cascade: a piano loop is processed via various subtle feedback systems, until the whole thing washes away in a haze. White LP on Temporary Re...view item »

The Disintegration Loops (Remastered)

William Basinski created his ambient and much storied record, 'The Disintegration Loops', by feeding his compositions on loop through a tape head until a myriad sounds were made in its place. The record's completion coincided with the 9/11 bombings, a sight which is recreated on the record's cover. Considered an attempt at making sound cycl...view item »

William Basinski
The Disintegration Loops IV

The fourth and final part of William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops releases, a series of recordings famed for the sheer evocative beauty they wrenched from decades-old tape loops. The tape was old enough that it started to literally fall apart as it was played, suggesting the melancholy of passing time and the i...view item »

Melancholia

To commemorate its 10-year anniversary William Basinski's Melancholia gets the remastered, virgin vinyl treatment on this, its first ever wax edition. Basinski is the undoubted master of emotional, decayed tape loop passages and this selection ranks amongst his most revered and referenced work. Packaged in a lovely...view item »

Vivian & Ondine

I was amazed when I saw what William Basinski looked like. Him being adopted by the more highbrow mob I expected him to be well dapper in some fancy suits or even some comfy jumpers... I didn't expect him to look as LA Metal as he does. I like it though.... It's good when folks confound expectations.... and with a new Basinski CD comes great expect...view item »

92982

It's amazing to think that William Basinski's '92982' was recorded in 1982 as it's the sort of thing that could come out on Kranky these days. Actually we're reminded of stuff like Tim Hecker, The Caretaker etc. This music features ultra soothing ambience and floating melodies. So much so that Phil just declared "I feel like I'm floating on a fu...view item »

Nocturnes

Here’s William Basinski’s first album of new solo material in four years, ‘Nocturnes’. You probably already have a good idea of whether or not you like Basinski, who has over the years perfected his slowly-decaying style of patient nostalgic tape loops which disintegrate and decay ...view item »

Yeah, just what I thought. All the original recordi...view item »

The River

The River of this album’s title could be taken as referring to the endless flowing torrent of static that fills the atmosphere, received as sound by shortwave radios. These 1980s pieces were crafted from shortwave signals, treated, looped, transformed. It is a credit to William Basinski’s powers that the res...view item »

Variations For Piano & Tape

William Basinski continues to pull tape material from his archive and put old sounds to good use. Variations For Piano & Tape appears to be just that, a melodic piano piece interfacing with the tape heads, slipping and stumbling and cracking and popping. Melancholy beauty. Out on Basinski&rsquo...view item »

El Camino Real

More compelling loop-based ambient action from premier loopster William Basinski. El Camino Real is, I am led to believe, composed from tape loops that have been lanquishing unheard for many years. Basinski’s processes resurrect them, but through a thick-yet-delicate layer of audio wizardry. What ...view item »

A Red Score In Tile

First time on CD this one and if anyone's music out there is suited to the CD format it's Mr Basinski's. Originally this came out on vinyl back in 2003 and it's long out of print. Having said that you'd think the degradation in sound and decaying tape loops would suit the vinyl format over the years as small crackles and that develop. God knows....view item »
