Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend

When they first appeared in 2007 Vampire Weekend showed the sort of magpie-like approach to mixing bits of world music and western rock not seen since Paul Simon's 'Graceland'. Theirs is a preppy, clever-clogs sound with lyrics concerning architecture and bus routes. Not your standard indie rock fare then. The original press release sums them up quite accurately as Franz Ferdinand meets the Bhundu Boys.

Vampire Weekend
Father Of The Bride

Vampire Weekend’s new album comes to us without any information other than the number of different formats there are (4). It’s their first album in five years, so yay! It’s called Father Of The Bride and features a bunch of guest artists including ex-Vampire Weekender Rostam Batmanglij. Early single suggest all the jokes people tell about the band will continue to have legs.

Rostam
Half-Light

Rostam (Batmanglij, also known as Boys Like Us) is most known for being in Vampire Weekend, as well as working with Frank Ocean, Solange and The Walkmen. Half-Light is his debut solo album, filled with cinematic electronic pop that pulls from the reflective, from neon synthetic charm to choral rises and timpani led percussion.

Baio
Man Of The World

Baio, aka Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, presents his second solo album, which, from its sleeve art presentation to its songwriting and production, dives straight into the shiny-sheened aesthetics of the 1980’s. Baio is obviously having fun here, with bright and lovely melodies backed up with pastel-coloured keyboards, guitar licks and multi-tracked vocals. Out on Glassnote.

Dams Of The West
Youngish American

Dams Of The West is in fact a solo project of Chris Tomson, better known as the drummer for none other than Vampire Weekend. Youngish American avoids the pitfalls of ‘drummer solo album’ very deftly, being a sweet suite of soulful pop music helmed by Tomson’s cool vocals. Youngish American is released by Colombia.

Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam
I Had A Dream That You Were Mine

This titanic super-duo of indie pop feelings-havers contains one Walkmen frontman and one Vampire Weekend songwriter -- Hamilton Leithauser is the former and Rostam Batmanglij the latter. With Leithhauser's band dissolving as Batmanglij quit his, the duo got together to write songs in grandiose baroque stylings, much in the mould of Leithauser's recent solo material. I Had a Dream That You Were Mine is a serene collection of newly-styled old fashioned, with "A 1000 Times", its lead single, a pulpy love song romp.

Modern Vampires Of The City

'Modern Vampires Of The City' was Vampire Weekend's third record and the first which saw them temper their previous carnival-like sound for something altogether a little more sober. Much hyped upon release, the album is a more mature work than seen previously with ruminations on death and adult responsibilities yet still retains an experimental air to the songwriting and recording process.

Vampire Weekend
Contra

Contra splits opinion. Some people don’t like Vampire Weekend’s second LP because it deviates too much from the preppy Graceland thing they did on their debut, while some people don’t like it because they think it doesn’t do that enough. However, a lot of people - including us - like it because it’s actually an excellently-realised and quietly boundary-pushing set of contemporary pop songs. Released at the very beginning of the 2010’s, tracks like ‘California English’ and the wonderful, Dirty Projectors-esque ‘Diplomat’s Son’ prefigured the broadening of indie-rock’s boundaries that would take place in the subsequent decade. Arguably their best album.
