Charles Hayward
Begin Anywhere

Charles Hayward is best known for being the drummer in ‘70s experimental rock band, This Heat and odd-prog band Camberwell Now. He has also played with Crass, The Raincoats, Gong and Phil Manzanera. Begin Anywhere seems like a different direction for him as he pours out his soul using just voice and piano.

This Heat
Live 80 - 81

It sometimes feels incongruous to think of This Heat as a live act, so fiercely experimental were (and still are) they as a studio band. But they can also make a ferocious racket live, as these recordings of an early-80s European tour will testify. Copping recordings from a microphone near the sound desk, this reissue of Live 80/81 comes remastered from the initial analog tapes.

This Heat
Repeat / Metal

Despite dropping in 1993 - long after trailblazing avantists This Heat had split - Repeat/Metal was recorded during the fruitful period between the band’s 1979 debut LP and 1981’s Deceit. Even by their standards, these twenty-minute opuses broke new ground for the group. Drawing on everything from music concrete to dub reggae to post-punk, you can see why This Heat were a favourite of the late John Peel. Now issued on vinyl for the first time ever.

This Heat
Made Available

Always ones for a good pun, serial groundbreakers This Heat have compiled their 1977 Maida Vale sessions for John Peel on this Made Available compilation. The eight tracks here may be the group’s earliest public recordings - they were taped fully two years before their self-titled debut LP saw daylight - but the mixture of New Wave, post-punk, music concrete, electroacoustic music and about a million other genres demonstrate that the group were light-years ahead of the competition even at this early stage.

This Heat
This Heat

This Heat remain one of the most unique and remarkable bands in existence, and it is a joy to see their catalogue being reissued on vinyl for the first time! This Heat, their debut, is full of post-punk churn, dissonant ambience, and even proto-drum & bass (‘24 Track Loop’). Remastered audio, 180g vinyl, and a booklet of notes and photos, on Modern Classics.

House Of Hayduk
City Of Quartz

Collaboration between Billy Gould of Faith No More, B J Miller of Health, Charles Hayward of This Heat! Dean Hurley who works with David Lynch, and Mads Heldtberg, award winning film score writer. Deconstructed, chaotic and one that must be played loud. Limited edition LP on Waxwork Records with exclusive hi-res download card.

Camberwell Now
The EP Collection

Ocean-inspired weirdery from London's Charles Hayward (The Heat) and an ensemble of friends, including a former BBC sound engineer and a ukulele player. Compiled from a selection of EPs originally released in the late 1980s, this vinyl is just one of The Heat / Camberwell Now's quirky recordings to enjoy a reissue on Modern Classics this year.

This Heat
Deceit

This Heat remain one of the most unique and remarkable bands in existence, and it is a joy to see their catalogue being reissued on vinyl for the first time! Deceit is a paranoid, blast of Cold War, post-punk creativity, moving from eerie creep to the ecstatic flare of ‘SPQR’ and the howl of ‘Makeshift Swahili’. Remastered audio, 180g vinyl, and a booklet of notes and photos, on Modern Classics.

Camberwell Now
The Ghost Trade

The Camberwell Now were a noise/art group formed by drummer and vocalist Charles Hayward after the disbanding of This Heat, featuring This Heat’s sound technician Stephen Rickard who created analogue sampling boards for field samples and tape manipulation way before the sampler was brought in. First vinyl reissue since 1986 and features a bonus unreleased track.

Gigi Masin & Charles Hayward
Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2

Though best known for his work in This Heat and Camberwell Now, erstwhile sound explorer Charles Hayward has done plenty else in his time. For example, this 1989 split LP with Gigi Masin. The two musicians were tasked with devising music inspired by their local rivers, which led Masin into beautiful looping melodic ambience and Hayward into a sinister side-long drift piece. First time on vinyl for this rare release, out on Modern Classics.

This Heat
Health and Efficiency

This Heat remain one of the most unique and remarkable bands in existence, and it is a joy to see their catalogue being reissued on vinyl for the first time! Health & Efficiency is a hell of an EP, combining weird tape-manipulated soundscape ‘Graphic/Varispeed’ with the title track, which seems to accelerate at least 4 times before getting locked in a tight loop. Remastered audio, 180g vinyl, and a booklet of notes and photos, on Modern Classics.

This Heat
