Stanley Brinks and The Wave Pictures
Tequila Island

Stanley Brinks and The Wave Pictures don’t seem to be able to stay out of their respective recording studios, so why shouldn’t they collaborate, eh? In fact, Tequila Island is their fifth album together. Working alone, the two acts are incredibly prolific, releasing 12 albums between them since they last collaborated in 2015. If you’re a fan of both you’ll either be delighted that there’s some new stuff or annoyed they’re making you spend more money. New records are always nice, though, aren’t they?

The Wave Pictures
Look Inside Your Heart

They promised you a second album in one year and here it is. Wymsbold-via-London trio The Wave Pictures return with Look Inside Your Heart, with cover artist Nina Garthwaite swapping out the last album’s lion for a delightful scarlet ibis. Recorded straight to reel-to-reel while rather merry, the US-tinged, narrative indie rock & roll songs are full of kindness, joy and contempt for computers.

The Wave Pictures
Canvey Island Baby

Fresh from a Billy Childish collaboration, these true-to-life indie-rock-’n’-rollers have a bash at some Wilko Johnson standards to honour the former Dr Feelgood guitarist beating cancer a couple of years back. The link from Johnson’s idiosyncratic take on r’n’b to The Wave Pictures has always been an easy one to trace, and they take to the project with the appropriate amounts of gusto and respect.

The Wave Pictures
Brushes With Happiness

The new album from the The Wave Pictures, Brushes With Happiness, has a name inspired by the drummer, Jonny Helm’s positive way with the trap set. Content-wise, the album follows a similar to path to their laid-back 2016 effort, A Season In Hull, and like that album it was recorded live in one day. Violet sparkle coloured vinyl, black vinyl and CD on Moshi Moshi.

Wakefield

Raging through the European calypso-folk-underground, Herman Dune has been making cheerful singalong songs since the 1990s. After changing his name to Stanley Brinks, his music has become less organized and even more endearing. Wakefield, taken from his new album My Ass, and b-side Dolores, will leave you with a wide grin.

The Wave Pictures
Bamboo Diner In The Rain

UK indie-blues outfit The Wave Pictures have a new album in the form of Bamboo Diner In The Rain. Once again, the group’s kitchen-sink songs are full of wit, though this album makes a change from the last acoustic one by being fully electrified: the rich tone of classic electric blues runs throughout the record. Released by Moshi Moshi.

The Wave Pictures
A Season In Hull

On A Season in Hull, the fourteenth studio album from English rockers The Wave Pictures, the group return to their lo-fi roots. Recorded live with a single microphone, this vinyl LP on Wymeswold Records relies on impeccable songwriting and charming grooves. The immediacy of the recording reminds us just how sharp and witty these guys have always been. Lovely stuff.

The Wave Pictures
The Fire Alarm

Opening with a distinct 80s bass-heavy surfpunk riff, but with lush choruses, it’s no wonder The Fire Alarm is one of our favorite cuts off Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon. The Wave Pictures are releasing this joyful and oldschool take on 7” with a hopefully equally appealing b-side in Calling Me Home.

The Wave Pictures
Pea Green Coat

Created in collaboration with one of their all-time favourite heroes, Billy Childish, ‘Pea Green Coat’ is the first single from the Wave Pictures’ new album Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon. Following on from their last collaborative project with Stanley Binks, Childish creates a riff-heavy, garage-rock spark here, accompanying Dave Tattersall’s searing guitar solos and usual acerbic wit.

The Wave Pictures
I Could Hear The Telephone (3 Floors Above Me) / Walking On The Water

I Could Hear The Telephone (3 Floors Above Me) / Walking On Water is the next single to be taken from The Wave Pictures forthcoming long-player Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon. The A-side cuts a garage groove with Go-Betweens-meets-Jonathan-Richman vocal. The B-side, Walking On Water is Creedence Clearwater Revival cover, with vocals by Billy Childish.

The Wave Pictures
Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon

Twee runaways The Wave Pictures have written a good getaway tune or two in their time, and a few great love songs. They continue their foray into unconventional indie pop with the impressively titled Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon, which the band co-wrote with Billy Childish. Lots of the usual show-boating, grinning choruses and strange diversions can be expected.
