The Heavy
Coleen (EL-B &; Rhythm Beater Remixes)

The Heavy
Hurt & The Merciless

On Hurt & The Merciless, The Heavy prove their blend of guitar-led neo-soul and modern funk is as tight as ever. Their sound might be rooted in the past, but their catchy songwriting and groovy experimentalism are defiantly modern. The Counter label bring this to CD and heavyweight 180 ...view item »

The Heavy
The Glorious Dead

The Heavy blends retro-soul, R&B, funk and garage rock to produce an awesome musical stew. Honestly, I was a little worried that the success of The House that Dirt Built would make the band a little complacent, and churn out something ultimately forgettable. They've done exactly the opposite and put out what is probably a better album musica...view item »

The Heavy
How You Like Me Now? (Joker & Solo Remixes)

Funksters The Heavy getting the remix treatment is probably quite a good pairing if you ask me as both artists are funky funkers. Joker takes their 'How You Like Me Now' track, snatches the vocal and drops it over his grime infected synth funk and its not bad at all really as far as these kinds of remixes go. one of the synths does sound a wee bit ...view item »

The Heavy
The House That Dirt Built

Points for this one, the album is outstanding. It's fresh in some ways and yet still feels familiar to some of the old school funk/rock bands. Don't let anything fool you about the appearance of this album....this is James Brown and George Clinton inspired funk. It isn't the same as either of those guys but keeps the same hard driving beat and m...view item »

The Heavy
Great Vengeance & Furious Fire

I checked this out after listening to The Glorious Dead and The House That Dirt Built, so I was kind of working backwards chronologically. GV&FF doesn't quite have the same spark that the subsequent albums possess, but it's still a really solid album; there isn't a lemon in the batch, and if you enjoyed their other work then this is a must-h...view item »

The Heavy
In The Morning

The Heavy have a 7" on Counter Records called In The Morning. This is some big brashy funk with some big guitars and big drums. Am thinking some of the latter David Holmes/ Free Association gear and maybe Big Chief if anyone remembers them?...view item »

The Heavy
Coleen

A 7" by The Heavy called Coleen on Counter records (which I am informed is a subsidiary of Ninja Tines). It's a strange sound to come out of Bath, England. It's got a retro party soul vibe with trumpets and delicate Princeseque vocals. It's even got the standard female gospel backing band to big up the chorus for good order. It all played in f...view item »

The Heavy
That Kind of Man

Industry mole Phil has reliably informed me that THE HEAVY have just signed to Ninja Tune. As soon as the needle hits the wax it's clear to see why as their heavy funk sound will sit comfortably on the label. Free Association, Curtis Mayfield and Sly and the Family Stone comparisons are being banded about the office. 'That Kind Of Man' builds in in...view item »
