Tenniscoats
Music Exists Disc 3

This is the third time now they've told us that music exists. We know it does; we just think it sucks. We don't think psychedelic, folksy and avant-rock duo Tenniscoats suck, though -- especially not on this collaboration with members of Swedish post-rock band Tape, who expand their songs to wonderful heights. This is the third in a series of their Music Exists reissues, by the way. Thanks Alien Transistor!

Tenniscoats
Music Exists Disc 4

For over twenty years, Japanese experimental folk band Tenniscoats have been making music however barring a few releases, including the beautiful Two Sunsets, a collaboration with The Pastels, the band haven’t released anything outside Japan. Music Exists Disc 4 is the fourth and final vinyl only release of their greatest work. The band have also previously collaborated with Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake and Half Japanese mainman, Jad Fair. LP on Alien Translator.

Ueno Takashi
Smoke Under The Water

Japanese guitarist Ueno Takashi is a prolific solo artist and a key collaborator, both as part of Tenniscoats and in one-offs with the likes of Keiji Haino. Here on Lawrence English’s Room40 label he presents a richly-detailed solo guitar composition, fantastically titled Smoke Under The Water. Music for inquisitive mind and playful fingers.

Tenniscoats
Music Exists Disc 2

Here lies part two of Tenniscoats’ quietly epic Music Exists project. As ever, the little-known Japanese outfit weave magic out of the simplest of ingredients: subtle guitars and keyboards, hushed vocals, delicate melodies. Music Exists Disc 2 is a special suite of music and no mistake. Vinyl release on Alien Transistor.

Tenniscoats
Music Exists Disc 1

Tenniscoats are a very special band. Operating out of Tokyo, they are little known to non-Japanese-speaking audiences. Their simple melodic songs have something wondrous about them, something to hold on to tightly. Music Exists is to be a quadruple album, but it is being released in bits and pieces so as not to overwhelm. Vol. 1 is out now on Alien Transistor.

Jad Fair, Tenniscoats and Norman Blake
Raindrops

What a team-up: Jad Fair of Half Japanese plus the wonderful Tenniscoats, as well as Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. With this personnel, Raindrops could hardly fail to be one the most playful and odd records of the year, and it does not disappoint! Lovely pop music from way outside, served up as a double LP on the Joyful Noise label.

Pastacas & Tenniscoats
Yaki-Läki Versions

Late last year, electronic act Pastacas joined forces with the psychedelic indie pop of Tenniscoats to make a dimly lit record of modest acoustic and experimental songs. 'Yaki-Läki', as it was known, now receives tribute and celebration by a wide variety of artists on 'Yaki-Läki'; this collection contains both remixes from electronic-minded artists and a more traditional cover.
