Sunn O)))
Pyroclasts

We will look back at 2019 as the year in which Sunn O))) released as many album as they played chords. 'Pyroclasts' follows 'Life Metal' and is pitched as the earlier record's "shadow album". Presumably this means it will not stop until it has destroyed that which casts it. A bit like Dark Link in Zelda. Heavy and slow, you know the drill.

Sunn O)))
Monoliths & Dimensions

'Monoliths & Dimensions' is probably Sunn O)))'s best album. And if you don't believe me consider that the Quietus named it the best album of their lifetime. High praise! As well as the usual Sunn O))) trademarked doom metal guitar drones, 'Monoliths & Dimensions' features a lot of playful elements, and never has to resort to cheesy spoken word.

Sunn O)))
Kannon

As any fool know, there’s none more heavy than Sunn O))). They’ve been collaborating a lot recently, both apart with various other projects and together with Scott Walker and Ulver, but at last we now have a pure new Sunn record! Kannon leans extra hard on the metal apparently, so look forward to that. On Southern Lord.

Sunn O)))
Life Metal

Here they come again, churning away. This time slo-mo metallers Sunn O))) have recorded with grumpy recording engineer Steve Albini who, when answering the phone from the big hairy guys said "Sure, this will be fun". And fun it was as the band drafted in violin ace Hildur Guðnadóttir (Mum, Pan Sonic) to add textures and all sorts to the ever expanding brew. Also Anthony Pateras guests on pipe organ.

Sunn O)))
Black One

Here we have a reissue of one of the classic Sunn O))) albums, on which the cowled duo set out to go as dark as they possibly could. To this effect, Black One features guest appearances from Oren Ambarchi, John Weise, Wrest and Malefic: the latter was locked in a coffin and his claustrophobic screams recorded. Heavy. Gatefold re-press on Southern Lord.

Scott Walker & Sunn O)))
Soused

Continuing their tireless campaign to work with every single artist and band threatening to be more bizarre and avant-garde than them, 'Soused' is the fifth collaborative record in Sunn O)))'s one-chord arsenal, following splits and records with Earth, Boris, Nurse With Wound and Ulver. This time around, they meet baritone pop singer -- gone crazy experimental musique concrete alien -- Scott Walker, who you at least have to admit is the most suitable Walker brother for Sunn to do an album with. Nicknamed Scott O))), Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson join together to make some lovely evil drone sounds for Walker to brood over. It's fifty minutes long and Walker's producing partner Peter Walsh probably got knocked out while it was being recorded, after maybe saying something like "Sunn Who???". It's the follow-up to 'Terrestrials' for Sunn and 'Bish Bosch' for Walker.

Gravetemple
Impassable Fears

Juicy heavy darkness here from Gravetemple, the experimental power trio of key Sunn O))) man Stephen O’Malley, terrifying Sunn O))) and Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar, and all-round sound wizard Oren Ambarchi. Impassable Fears is a welcome return, a record that throbs with ferocious metallic power and sharp minimalist sonic details. CD / LP editions on Svart.

Stephen O'Malley
Fuck Fundamentalist Pigs

Highly sought after and very limited second pressing of a solo performance by Stephen O’Malley. Member of drone lords Sunn O))), Æthenor, Khanate, and founder of Southern Lord and Ideologic Organ. His personal statement after the Hebdo attacks is anger towards facist and fundamental movements through his droning guitar and a huge stack of amplifiers.

Stephen O'Malley
Dread Live

Sunn O)))’s feedback architect Stephen O’Malley cranks the amps even louder on his solo vinyl LP Dread Live. This is an extended and extremely loud improvisation for solo guitar (though the colossal heaviness sounds like an army of guitarists). Relentless waves of heavy drones and squeals bombard the listener; the man has turned distortion into an artform.

Stephen O'Malley
End Ground

Drone-guitar-merchant Stephen O’Malley steps away from his wide array of collaborators (with Greg Anderson in SunnO))), with Peter Rehberg in KTL etc.) for a solo release, a document of a live set in Paris in 2013. End Ground sounds precisely as heavy-weighted and slow-growing as you’d expect. Second and final pressing on iDEAL Recordings in an edition of 250 copies.

Sunn O)))
Domkirke

Domkirke is a document of a 2007 live performance by Sunn O))) in the atmospheric environment of Bergen Cathedral. Stretching far beyond the usual palette of infinitely-amped riff-crashing, these 4 side-long tracks feature plenty of organ and the dread vocals of Attila Csihar. It is an interesting corner of the Sunn O))) canon, a welcome reissue. 2LP on Southern Lord.
