The Magnetic Fields
69 Love Songs

If you wanted to make an incredibly long album and you figured 100 songs would be too many what would be the next number you'd pick? Anyway, Stephen Merritt did a ridiculous thing and wrote 69 indie pop songs about love and actually managed to pull it off. These are songs that had to be eccentric and endearing, which they are.

The Magnetic Fields
Quickies

Stephin Merritt’s The Magnetic Fields has always been a project upon which to launch a good concept, and Quickies is no different. Consisting entirely of short, simple and sub-three-minute songs, it’s a 28-track collection which will be released physically over five 7” vinyls, available together as a box set.

Stephin Merritt
Obscurities

Stephin Merritt is of course the grump behind the Magnetic Fields, the 6ths, the Gothic Archies etc etc. The man is a songwriting machine and Obscurities collects up all the detritus from his career, It includes material from all those aforementioned bands as well as some solo stuff. All are non-album bits and bats put into one place for your listening ease.

The Magnetic Fields
50 Song Memoir

Another bit of music-hall high-conceptitude here from Stephin Merritt & Co. There’s a song here for each of Merritt’s 50 years on Earth, with writing begun on his 50th birthday. Not quite 69 but age inevitably brings a slowing down of productivity. Despite the shift from storytelling or meta-songwriting to a more autobiographical lyrical style there’s nothing here to throw long-term fans and enough wit, guile and craft to charm plenty of new ones.
