Stephen Malkmus
Traditional Techniques

Not put off by the fact that Pavement are reuniting for Primavera this year, the group’s legendary lead singer Stephen Malkmus is releasing his second solo album in as many years. Following 2019’s electronic-influenced Groove Denied, Traditional Techniques is both adventurous yet comfortingly familiar.

Real Emotional Trash

He's a card isn't he? Stephen Malkmus's solo career is now as long and as wandering as one of the verses he writes. Real Emotional Trash was his 2008 effort and fourth solo album bringing in Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney) on drums. The former Pavement frontman is on his usual eccentric form with big riffs, extended jams and his usual clever wordplay.

Stephen Malkmus
Groove Denied

We've all had mid-life crisis moments. For example, my dad sold the family car and bought himself a motorbike. This album is most likely Stephen Malkmus's mid-life crisis moment. For many musicians a mid-life crisis moment sees them embracing electronica and IDM after years of chugging along with guitars. So this could be as good/bad as Bob Mould's 'Modulate' album.

Sparkle Hard

Here's renowned Pavementeer Stephen Malkmus with more indie rock verbosity. Sparkle Hard is his latest record as bandleader of the Jicks, and with its aggressively cheerful title, it's no surprise that he's found some peace writing from a place of joy. I'm sure there's some signature sad sighs in there, too, but it sounds like Malkmus is ready to have a good time.
