Heralding from Glenrothes, Scotland, Sergeant’s sound is very much immersed in jingle jangle guitar licks which made Liverpool legends the La’s rise to prominence in the late 80’s. Nick mercer’s piercing vocal is reminiscent of Lee Mavers spine tingling delivery whereas; Scott Duncan’s Guitar wizardry is very much a nod towards the striking indie-pop fret work of Smiths visionary veteran Johnny Marr.
There first release ‘K’ok’ has already been praised by NME as ‘the most perfect jingle-jangle pop anthem we can imagine being penned’. Sergeant are currently holed up with John Leckie the legendary producer behind Radiohead – ‘The Bends’, Stones Roses – Eponymous debut and The Verve’s ‘A Storm In Heaven’, recording their as yet untitled debut, penned in for a September released on Mercury Records.
Alan Mcgee has been quick to herald the band along with Glasvegas as the saviours of Scottish Music in his Guardian Blog, along with Mcgee, Emily Eavis personally asked the unsigned band in 2006 to play Glastonbury so taken aback she was with their refreshing material.
In December the lads saw the New Year in with style selling out the 1500 capacity rothes hall in Glasgow, still without having a single released. Expect a flurry of live activity to be announced soon, but for the time being ‘K’OK’ and the infectious ‘Time Is Now’ should be enough to wet your appetite.
