We've aquired some stuff on Sheffield's Singing Knives label. Currently vibrating the air are the folk tones of Stephanie Hladowski. A folk accapella that's extremely pure. All this singer songwriter gear that gets put under the folk banner these days can fuck right off. This is proper folk music. When she's accompanied by the acoustic guitar (I assume she's playing it) she sounds great, full of soul, emotion and passion. Definitely the real deal, very traditional and olde England sounding. You can tell this is created for the sole reason of the love of doing so. These songs tell stories....Fans of Shirley Collins and Josephine Foster should be clambering all over each other in their thick arran knit jumpers to get their folkie paws all over this 10" of folk bliss. 'The High Nest' is is making me wish I hadn't shaved my beard off. Well Robin Hood.

What their label says...

‘Stephanie Hladowski recorded the four ballads on The High High Nest while a member of the Glaswegian ecstatic jazz and folk collective Scatter. Listening to her lean, vulnerable voice, alone or with sparse instrumental accompaniment of drones and shimmers, is a directly affecting experience … the communicative power of the human voice remains a current truth - delicate power in Hladowski’s case, but nonetheless real.’ Julian Cowley, The Wire
