After all the hideous adolescent indie gash i've just had to suffer, the F. Lunaire 'Mondestrunken EP' 7" on Stiff is a pleasant surprise. It's some dude who's been squeezing in night time sessions at Sarm studios with Trevor Horn's son. Coming up with something that endorses a lot of very colourful piano and glam(ourous) percussion with husky, playful vocals, this could appeal to fans of bands i actually actively dislike (IE Scissor Sisters & The Duke Special) but as he's playing with a skewed pop sensibility, he sounds like a virtuoso with a warped mind, too musical to be avant garde, too intelligent to offer up anything too obvious. This is left of centre stuff, but totally accesible. You can feel his natural talent. I could even imagine him playing with Rufus Wainright or Anthony Hagarty. He's got that degree of musical class you see!

What their label says...

When I asked Florian what his solo project was, all he told me was that it was about trying to play the piano like Sonic Youth play the guitar. I always assumed it was going to be really weird and noisy, because all he seemed to do at the time was come home at 3 in the morning, and play stupidly obscure records really loud in his room.?

The Mondestrunken E.P. (German for "Moon-drunk") is based on this old collection of poems about Pierrot Lunaire, and also because he's half German. Then again he had told me before that he was half French and half Tibetan, and I've heard him say at parties that he was half Japanese, half English and half Italian so I don't know if I should really believe him or not.*

Produced by Aaron Horn (son of Trevor Horn), the E.P was pieced together at Sarm studios, where him and F.Lunaire were moonlighting in the wee hours, when studios were empty.

The Mondestrunken the E.P is released 3rd March 2008 through Stiff records. F.Lunaire recently performed live at the Tate Britain, as part of the Wowow Late at the Tate gig. You can see him live:
