German, though UK resident, Smatka has been singing her unique and slightly unsettling brand of eighties-style Weimar pop for a couple of years now. This, however will be her first UK release, on Zap System Records, who were responsible for Die! Die! Die!'s sold out limited edition single, 'Ashtray! Ashtray', last year. Smatka is a whole different ball game. Her live shows are marked by her appearance (risque and vampish) and her on stage banter, as well as her incredible voice (Smatka is often paid to teach other singers how to sing). TIME OUT described her recently as "Highly stylised techno-electro cabaret, dominated by operatic vocals and surreal storytelling". Artrocker described her music as "a masterclass in mental pop-ness". With an album planned for next year, it looks like Smatka is going from strength to strangth.
