Led by Malcolm Catto, the drummer much-admired and sampled by Madlib and DJ Shadow, Heliocentrics have been working on this aptly-titled LP for four years, and good luck trying to categorize it. Heliocentrics exist in an alternative galaxy, where the orbits of hip hop, funk, jazz, psychedelia, electronica, avant garde and ethnic sounds all revolve around the musical holy grail known as “the one”. ‘Out There’ mixes influences as diverse as James Brown’s funk, the disorientating asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Morricone, and David Axelrod’s sublime compositional fusion. But retro it ain’t… ‘Out There’ is a new timeless masterpiece of spaced instrumentalism.
