Digging this trippy album from DEERHUNTER on Kranky called 'Cryptograms'. It's initially mercurial space rock falling into passages of hugely engaging beatless sound, cascading walls of guitar effects layered in a very 'Loveless' style. Then it's jerky freeform no/nu wave & disjointed punk funk with muffled vocals buried under intense sonic squalls of noise. I can hear This Heat definately. It draws heavily on sprawling psychedelia, stunted garage rock & beautiful ambience (oooh ya cannae beat a spot o' trickling water to sooth yr soul!) whilst the band ebbs & flows in & out of the mix like the drummer needs a spliff break every 5 minutes. There's more lucid sounding harmonic rock shapesto come later proving they're an eclectic bunch. Overall they're a mesmerising bunch of trip'eads these people. A very engrossing & multi levelled listen is 'Cryptograms'. It can work merely as aural wallpaper or be a deep meditative journey depending on yer mood/patience. A nice canon shot from the Kranky head massive.
